Musings From A Musical Mind

Last year at this time – Greg and I were all dressed up and heading towards the “Georgian” restaurant in Seattle for his parent’s 50th wedding anniversary celebration.  It was colder last year with snow and ice all over the place.

What a difference a year makes!

This year – Greg and I just had coffee together and shared a piece of pecan pie from the other night – in the “talking” room.  This is the room where the fireplace is – and where we have interrogated our children over the years – put them under the “search light” and reamed them out for various issues.  These days it has become the room where much conversation has taken place in the last year between Greg and me.  It’s not as cold this year – but we have made many cozy fires in there anyway and in so many ways –  it was a much better Christmas.

Today Shawn came home and announced that he had to “wash the car”.  I thought I would fall over from shock!  I said, “Who are you – and what have you done with my son?”  He’s 18 and I know the “girlfriend” factor ranks pretty high – not the “Mom” factor.  I’m pretty invisible to him most of the time – although he did make me a wonderful blanket for Christmas – it’s really cuddly and warm too!  And despite him still being a teenager he is still a pretty nice guy.  Sometimes he just amazes me.

I’m starting to discover a new “Man Child” in my son.  In much the same way my daughter turned the corner a few years back from being a little girl to a woman.  It is a new season of discovery for all of us in these years – and I’m looking forward with great anticipation to see what will happen next – and what the Lord has planned for this special son of mine.

Below is one of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs – entitled “The Circle Game”. It so poignantly describes the childhood and growing up of a boy.  Enjoy!

May you discover new and amazing things this new year with the relationships in your own life.

God Bless ♥

  1. Ah Cindy, you’ll be a wonderful grandmother! 🙂

Yes, children grow up, but somewhere deep inside of them there’s still that little child that will need us on occasion. Parenthood is a job for life. 🙂

  2. I love that song by Joni Mitchell, Cindy. Thanks for the reminder. Now that I have two away from home in ND, I find myself teary eyed whenever I see a very small child with his or her mom and dad. Boy, those years went fast.

    • I feel exactly the same way, Ron. Wow – I know what you mean – they go so fast – next phase is Grandparents – don’t think I’m ready for that yet – but it will be here sooner than we like it!!!

Thanks Cindy for the video, great song!

It is fun to watch your children as they become adults…..and a bit sad but I wouldn’t have it any other way!! Daric’s is an amazing young man, now a husband who is loving and kind, I couldn’t imaging him any other way!!

The pulling away that happens is a good thing too…It seems like a healthy thing for them and us Mom’s that way when the wife comes in she has her space in his life as she should. As they get older they become more protective of you and caring in a different way…now this is strange yet another good change, I think!!! We’re there now a little so I’ll let you know if I like this change I see in him towards me…..if he gets me a cane I’m thinking it wont be so good!!!! : )

  4. Enjoy your days with your son and dd when you can. My dd is usually 1800 miles away at college but we are enjoying having her home for the holidays. She is taking me out tomorrow for my Christmas present. It’s a day with my dd! Precious!
