Musings From A Musical Mind

In this season of graduations – I thought I would share our graduation picture from Northwest University – formally Northwest College – in the spring of 1983.  Both my Son Shawn, and Son-in-law Drew are graduating from High School and University, respectively this spring.  Good times, good times.  I remember it was about 95 degrees the day we graduated and I could feel the sweat dripping down my front and back – I was wearing a brand new dress under that robe and back “in the day” the graduations used to be in the gymnasium and the room was HOT!!!

Hope you are building memories today with your family and friends.

God Bless!

  1. I think the graduation speaker was Wesley Hurst. Five minutes was too long that day. I lost five pounds sitting there in that woolen robe. The best part was driving away from the school with EVERY WINDOW ROLLED DOWN…and more dark hair than gray!

    Congrats on the fam graduating!

    • Thanks Mike – we could NOT remember!! Did you and I have any classes together? Man I’m drawing a blank from that long ago – how about you? I just remember wanting to GET OUT OF THERE!!!

      • I’m thinking that we could have during our freshman year with Orville Clark or Maxine Williams. However, you were a music major and I was a youth ministries guy – so our crossovers later on would have been electives. That’s what I would guys anyway.

I worked three jobs through much of school. Wasn’t around as much as I could have been in regard to campus life.

But graduation was a great, bittersweet day. Loved NC!

      • I wish I knew you better back then too Mike – there didn’t seem to be time for a lot of relationships back then – I know I was married after Sophomore year and then busy with junior and senior recital not to mention the first two years being in Choralons!! I’m glad to be reconnecting with all of you from “back in the day” 🙂

  2. Great, now you make me feel old. I was a part of that graduation ceremony. Sweated like a pig-dog! Who was the graduation speaker? Do you remember? All I can remember is that I wished he would get done so we could get on with it and out of there. It was really stuffy in the gymnasium.

    • Were you the same year as us? I thought you were but I wasn’t sure. I can’t remember who that was – didn’t care – was SO MISERABLE!!!! I wish I would have known you better back then Ron – that’s a regret that I have. What classes did we have together? Do you remember?

      • Oofda…what classes? I can’t remember THAT kind of detail that far back! Goodness…probably all of our generals. I do remember you in a couple classes. Yes, I graduated in ’83. Kelly had dropped out of school for a year and came back the next year to do elementary education. She was one of the first into the program. She graduated in ’86. We got married in August and moved into ‘The Firs’ and I went back to school and graduated again in ’85 with the last of the Th.B. degrees they awarded. It was no more after that year. You probably don’t remember me much because between classes, the library, the cafeteria and playing basketball in the gym is was either locked away in my room studying. I was one of those wall flower kids. Although for some strange reason, I managed to get elected class Vice-president our senior year. Kevin Strum was class President and Denise Baunsgard (now French) was class Secretary. I was also granted the privilege by Dr. Braddy to preach the senior class chapel service for the Homelitcs class. That in itself is a strange story. One I’ll have to tell on my Blog sometime.

      • I’m glad you cleared that up! Wow – we have a strange and parallel history – we also lived in the ‘The Firs’ from 81-83 in one of the old rooms with the old furniture. I don’t think I remember you being class Vice President – but do remember Denise and Kevin. We are still very good friends with Dr. Braddy – he was on staff at New Life Church with us for several years. I didn’t know that about you getting to preach for your homelitcs class – man I should have paid a little more attention I guess – was busy being married – and doing a junior and senior voice recital! Were you on the basketball team – or just playing for fun?

      • Just playing for fun – intramurals and church teams and pick up games. The Lord asked me to give up basketball my Freshmen year. We lived in The Firs from ’83 – ’85. Kelly was on the Married Student Council. That time was all a blur because I was working 40 hours a week Downtown Seattle at the Bank of California as a security guard plus going to school.

      • I remember it being a bit of a blur too – working part time and going to school full time – plus preparing for music recitals both my junior and senior year. Wow. How did we do it all anyway? Made us grow up fast – that’s for sure.

  3. Congratulations to them!
