Musings From A Musical Mind

Show Me The Way

Below is the the music video for my favorite song by the rock group Styx.  Enjoy!

Every night I say a prayer in the hope that there’s a heaven
And every day I’m more confused as the saints turn into sinners
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I’ve lost my faith

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Show me the way

And as I slowly drift to sleep, for a moment dreams are sacred
I close my eyes and know there’s peace in a world so filled with hatred
That I wake up each morning and turn on the news to find we’ve so far to go
And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid that I just won’t know

Show me the way, Show me the way
Take me tonight to the mountain
And wash my confusion away

And if I feel light, should I believe
Tell me how will I know

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Show me the way, show me the way
Give me the strength and the courage
To believe that I’ll get there someday
Show me the way

Every night I say a prayer
In the hope that there’s a heaven…

  1. This is one of my FAVORITE songs! Oh–my–goodness! It is one of the most spiritual and prophetic songs from a non-Christian band, I think. (There are a number of them, I think, that many Christians have missed because they have thrown out all secular music.) You really hear the cry of the human heart. About a month ago I was playing this song over and over just listening and absorbing the words. Thanks for bringing it back to mind again!

    • I’ve ALWAYS loved this song!!! Oh my goodness – this is really getting scary!! In a good way – you are my twin brother from another mother!!

I’ve always connected with the lyrics and can see the cross over to a “love” relationship as well as the spiritual overtones. Secular music was overlooked in the 70’s by “good” kids from Christian homes – but I was always listening to the top 40 hits ever since I had a transistor radio of my own and I would go to bed at night and have my earphones in my ear and listen, listen, listen. My parents would never have approved of all that “rock music” so I was very much in my own little world with it.

When I met Greg he had very different taste in music and was from a family that listened to gospel quartet like the Gaither’s. I was not so familiar with any of that music until I married into that family. I had to educate Greg on “my music” and he tried to like it – but still has trouble – although the classic rock songs with a heavy beat he likes somewhat. He really likes the “BeeGee’s” so sad. I can’t relate.

I was raised on Classical music – and my Dad being a musician insisted on that playing in our home ALL THE TIME. I have an appreciation for some of it – but do not like a steady diet of it – nope – I LOVE my 70’s rock ballads. I like some of the music of today though, to be fair. Shawn played me a song just yesterday from a new band and I do like it. My son is a musician – a very good drummer and guitar player – and has even written and laid down some really good tracks! For 18 – not too shabby. I was always a song writer and have a whole cassette tape of “songs” that a friend and I wrote in high school – what a hoot!! I also love “The Gabe Dixon Band” and “Coldplay” both bands that are current and really great!

  2. I liked Styx too but I never heard this song before. I love the song, but I really didn’t understand the video.
