Last night I had a recital for my vocal and piano students. A very special young man who I have taught every week in my home for the last 8 years – graduated last night from level six piano – he is 15 years old. He started when he was 7 years old as a voice student – and even at that age he was one of the most talented young singers I have ever had the privilege of coaching.
As he sang and played last night – his own composition at the end of the program – I don’t think there was a dry eye in the audience. It was an emotional event – knowing this is an end – but also a beginning for him as he launches out into new adventures. As the audience gave him a much deserved standing ovation at the end – I was lost in the moment – reflecting back over all the years invested – all the love and sharing – the weeks of learning, pain and hard moments – moments of great happiness and joy too. It was surreal and precious. One of those ‘once in a lifetime’ moments.
The following song was sung by another student last night. It was my personal favorite of the evening because of the lyrics and what they mean to me. The song is from “Wicked” – which I have never seen – but I know that I must see it – after performing this song and another one called “Defying Gravity” from that musical. Both very special songs – with great meaning.
These words are special. When you listen to this song – I’m sure you can think of those throughout your life that have greatly impacted and made a difference for you. I have several in my life. After reflecting on last night’s recital – I would have to say that every one of my students has made a difference – changed me and brought something deep and meaningful. This song is for them and the many others who have made a difference in my life. I am eternally grateful to all of you. ♥
