Musings From A Musical Mind

46 - 1980 - Rolling Stones - The Boxes - Nr.2 ...

This is my favorite song by the ‘Rolling Stones‘.  There are lots of rumors associated with these lyrics – but have all been denied by Mick Jagger.  The actual story seems to be very simple – the title of the song was given by Keith Richards – who had just had a daughter named Angela.  Mick wrote the rest of the lyrics and may have had something to do with a bad breakup that he experienced with his girlfriend in 1969 – at least that much has been speculated.  I find this very easy to believe as some of the greatest love songs are written out of sadness and pain – and this seems to be no exception.  As a musician – I love the chords and melody and deep emotion that this song represents.  Whether or not you are a fan of 70’s music – or the Rolling Stones – I think that you can agree with me on this one point – it is a beautiful ballad.

Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear?
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can’ t say were satisfied
But Angie, Angie, you can’t say we never tried
Angie, you’re beautiful, but ain’t it time we said good-bye?
Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried?
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear:
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?
Oh, Angie, don’t you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain’t it time we said good-bye?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can’t say were satisfied
But Angie, I still love you, baby
Everywhere I look I see your eyes
There ain’t a woman that comes close to you
Come on baby, dry your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain’t it good to be alive?
Angie, Angie, they can’t say we never tried

As I remembered one of them claimed they were more popular than Jesus Christ and was killed not too long afterwords.

    • I think you may be referring to John Lennon from the Beatles – and I believe he was quoted as saying that the ‘Beatles’ were more popular than Jesus Christ – he didn’t claim to be Him. There’s a Huge difference there.

  2. Yes, it is a beautiful ballad. One of my favorite Stones songs. I look at those pics you posted. They weren’t pretty back then and they sure haven’t improved with age. ROFLOL I remember liking them better than the Beatles ‘cuz they had this “edge,” not quite as goody two shoes, ya know? 🙂

    • Mine too – I never thought of the Beatles as ‘goody two shoes’ though – they were pretty ingrained in the drug culture too – Remember ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ and “Strawberry Fields Forever’?

Yes Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are NOT good looking – but they had something else – confidence.
