Today while on the elliptical, I turned to a live performance of Diana Krall singing with a rhythm ensemble in Rio. It was so impressive – because like any good performer, they make it seem so easy – when it is anything but that. She plays jazz piano like I’ve seen only a few do, and has a rich throaty alto voice, reminiscent of other great jazz artists of the 30’s and 40’s.
I was mesmerized by her unique style and grace while performing – and enjoyed immensely the old tunes, such as “Fly me to the Moon” and other signature
tunes from other artists. The one in particular that caught my attention was a very bluesy version of “I’ve grown accustom to your face” from “My Fair Lady”. She said it is her husband’s favorite – and it looks as if she can see his face before her when she sings it. I was actually going to post it, if I could find it on youtube, until the song “Count Your Blessings” from “White Christmas” caught my notice. Many people have tried to do a “cover” for this great piece and frankly, I thought no one could do it justice like Bing and Rosemary – but I was wrong. Really wrong. Diana gives a little something more to the song – and made me a believer – that classic music can be redone – sometimes better than before.
Hope you enjoy it!
