Say It With Warmth

The other day I wrote about being gentle – and posted an old folk tune called “A gift to be simple”.  After I posted it, I remembered a fable with a similar theme.

Remember Aesop‘s story about the contest between the sun and the wind? In the fable, the two heavenly forces are debating which of them is more powerful when they see a man walking down a lonely road. They decide to settle their dispute by seeing which of them can get the man’s coat off the fastest. The wind tries first, blowing fiercely at the man’s shoulders. But the man pulls the coat closer, and the wind cannot get it off. Then the sun takes its turn. It shines gently on the man, slowly warming him, until he decides to take the coat off himself.

In much the same way, we sometimes take a situation and try to force our way through it, or even (gasp) other people – in order to accomplish a goal.  Now the goal may be very good – even “spiritual” in its origin – but if we are not careful, we can become a Spiritual “bully”.

I’ve seen this.  Worse – I’ve actually experienced it.

Try kindness.

Try warmth.

Try love.

What you try to “force” can be accomplished much more quickly and effectively by gentleness, kindness, understanding and love.

Just saying 🙂

When was the last time you were “bullied” – spiritually or any other way?  When was the last time someone motivated you with love instead?

God Bless

  1. Cindy, this is sort of a reply to both of your posts this week. It strikes me that gentleness and simplicity do go hand in hand but in many situations, love and simplicity do not. In many cases, the easiest answer to a tough situation, one that should evoke our love and concern, is a simplistic one, the quick answer or reductionist solution. I just know that for me, while love itself can be a simple act, to get to the point of performing that act isn’t always simple. Sometime love is the hardest thing we can do. So I guess I should say that maybe love is simple, but it isn’t always easy…except for small children. They haven’t made life as complicated as we have as adults.
