Musings From A Musical Mind

Something Bigger

Seattle is my home town – at least it has been since I’ve been 8 years old.  Even though I lived somewhere else for about 15 years after I was married, it was still my real home.  Ever since 1995 we have settled in the shadow of Seattle – and now most recently we moved but are still just 2 1/2 hours away – east of the mountains.

Winning the Super Bowl reminds me that we all love to belong to something bigger than ourselves.  Whether we live there or not – we all love that sense of importance we feel from a big event and we tend to gravitate toward people who are like-minded. Nothing brings a city and region together like winning the Super Bowl!

Watching the game this past Sunday filled me with a sense of pride.  Not so much that I was ever a die-hard Seahawks fan – or even a football fan until this year – but it was that feeling that we are all in this together – that feeling of something bigger.  Part of a winning team!  No one can dispute how well our team played – and that there are such great role models on the team – many of whom are Christians and speak out about their faith in God.  Ordinary people – with incredible athletic gifting – rising to the top of the sport.  Better than any reality music show.

As a part of God’s kingdom – we all can feel like we belong to something bigger.  Even if we are not a pro athlete or musician.  We are all given special abilities and gifts to affect those around us.  Think about it!  Only you can be that special person to those around you.  You alone have the God-given ability to influence and direct.  You are special.  You are unique.  And if you are not already – you can belong to something bigger than just yourself.  The God of the whole universe!  His kingdom and plan!  You can have a real cause and purpose.  I believe that if you ask – you can discover just what that is.  For some people it is a process of going through life day-to-day just being constant and faithful to your family.  For others you are meant to be on a bigger stage touching more people at once and sharing your example.  But no matter what that special bent in your own personal life and personality – know that you are something unique and special to God.  In Psalm 139:14 we read:

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

You were fearfully and wonderfully made.  You are a part of something special.  Special to God.  A part of His something bigger.

Take it in and believe.  Embrace the something bigger today.

God Bless

    Good Morning, Cindy.

I loved your post. I became a 49nr fan in high school when one of their players spoke to the students. It was a motivational speech and it was a new idea to me that I could succeed at anything, but then he explained professional football to us. This would be back in the 1948–52 era. Our football players thought some of the rules were silly in those days, but I was hooked.

Then I wanted 37 or so years for our first championship—thanks to the likes of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. i was a fun 10 years.

I know how you and Washington feel about your teams great win. There is nothing like it in this life.

I will try to make this part concise. You touched on a great point–we are part of (excuse the wording) Christ’s team–the church—all born again Believers all over the world. I had a few on the internet jump me about inconsistent church attendance and not being a member of a local church yet. I agree with the criticism. They still miss the main point. Your point is the right one—saying we should just go to a 1.5 hour church service once a week is an insult to Christ. My weakness is worse than just missing a church service. It is not participating in life with all Christians we know all of the time. We used to be that way.

When my MIL and Aunt moved into our house for 5 years for care—my wife bearing the brunt of most of it. She appealed for moral and spiritual support from the pastor and other Christians. She not only did not get any, she was abandoned. An owner of a Christian book store told us that as soon as a family moves in an aging relative, they are always abandoned.

I do not offer the above as an excuse, but to support your view–the church, including me and my wife, should be so close to other Christians that we participate in their joys and sorrows.

Happily, my wife and I still love the Lord, read the Bible and witness. My wife has lead two gals to the Lord the past few months. Many still call her for prayer.

    I loved your post today.

    frank
