Musings From A Musical Mind

Somewhere

If you are keeping up with reality music programs like I am – you no doubt know the name Candace Glover. Next week is the finale for American Idol and three girls competed last night to be in that finale next week. This girl has my vote. Her vocal ability is unmatched on the Idol stage this year. And as Keith Urban said last night, “If you don’t vote for Candace, go see your doctor because you don’t have a pulse!” I agree!

Here is the beautiful rendition done last night of “Somewhere”

We’ve Got Tonight – sung by Phillip Phillips

Last night an incredible thing happened on a program with almost 2 hours of disappointing song choices and performances. This young man saved the best performance of the night as he sang “We’ve Got Tonight”. His control and emotion while delivering this – just blew me away. Take a listen and see if you don’t agree. At the end of the day after all the vocal acrobatics and screaming – it is so nice to have someone just sing the beautiful melody of this song – which has always been one of my favorites. ¬†I think Bob Seger must be proud ūüôāWe've Got Tonight

Take care and God Bless

My pick for last night’s American Idol show. Holly did an amazing job with this very difficult song – made famous by Tina Turner and Celine Dion. Hope you enjoy it ūüôā She may be the dark horse of this competition.

What do you think? Who is your favorite?

God Bless

Ready For Love

My pick for last night’s performances – Joshua singing “Ready For Love”. Very good choice for him – where at last we see the real talent and range of his voice without all the screaming and vocal acrobatics. It was a winner for sure, at least last night.

I LOVE both Jessica and Skylar who are STRONG vocalists every week. But I think Joshua may have taken some of their votes last night.  The Queen songs they both did were FANTASTIC.  Interesting note Р4 out of the 6  contestants were not even born yet when Freddy Mercury died in 1991.  Unbelievable.

What did you think of last night? Who is your favorite?

Stuttering

If you are watching American Idol – you know the name Jessica Sanchez. She’s amazing – and only 17 years old.

I was not familiar with the original version of this song Рbut the judges noted that she put a very unique twist to the song, slowed it down and made it more soulful.  I liked it РA LOT.

I’m keeping my eye on this girl – she will be the one to beat.

Who’s your favorite this year?

God Bless

Everything

This week on American Idol, Colton Dixon sang this song by “Lifehouse” called “Everything”.

Whether or not you are a fan of Colton, you will have to agree that he sings with passion and is very talented. I had not heard this song before, and really liked it – so thank you Colton!

God Bless

Find me here, and speak to me
I want to feel you, I need to hear you
You are the light that’s leading me to the place
Where I find peace again
You are the strength that keeps me walking
You are the hope that keeps me trusting
You are the life to my soul
You are my purpose
You’re everything
And how can I stand here with you
And not be moved by you
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

You calm the storms and you give me rest
You hold me in your hands
You won’t let me fall
You steal my heart and you take my breath away
Would you take me in, take me deeper now
And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this
And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this

Cause you’re all I want, you’re all I need
You’re everything, everything

You’re all I want
You’re all I need
You’re everything, everything
You’re all I want
You’re all I need
You’re everything, everything
You’re all I want
You’re all I need
Everything, everything

And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this
And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you
Would you tell me how could it be any better-any better than this
And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this

Are You Forgettable?

Singer Katherine McPhee and pianist Lang Lang ...

Image via Wikipedia

I have a confession to make. A guilty pleasure if you will.

I watch American Idol. Every season since season 3. ¬†I didn’t really get into before that – but I do remember every season since Fantasia.

Over the years I have seen some extraordinary talent emerge from that program Рamong those really great РKris Allen,  Chris Daughtry, David Cook and Carrie Underwood Рthe likes of which we would never have heard about otherwise.  All of them have made songs famous Рand we can name at least one that is our favorite from each artist.

A few years back Katherine McPhee was a runner-up on the show – and other than “Over the Rainbow” – I was not completely taken with her voice. ¬†I thought she tried too hard to make her voice do all the runs and vocal¬†acrobatics that some should not do. ¬†I thought she was forgettable, until…

A couple of years later I heard this song on the radio. ¬†“Ordinary World”. ¬†It was amazing – both music and lyrics. ¬†I found it and put it on a playlist for my car and computer – and have never grown tired of hearing it when it comes up in the rotation. ¬†I think you will like it too.

Forgettable?  I think not.

Who is someone who has surprised you – when you thought they were forgettable?

Enjoy and God Bless
