My daughter, Ashlee – soon to be married – is deathly afraid of spiders. And most other “crawly” insects. But mostly spiders. It’s ironic – because she LOVED Charlotte’s Web – the movie and the book – had most of the lines from the movie memorized when she was four – and Charlotte is, after all – a SPIDER. But I guess you can’t mix fantasy with real life – at least according to Ashlee.
Several years ago she got a HORRIBLE spider bite on her leg and it got infected and she had to be on antibiotics and everything before the stupid bite would go away. I’m sure it gave her nightmares just thinking about that spider biting into her flesh – and we used to tease her (just a little) about spiders being in her bed with her. Okay – I’m a BIG TEASE and I couldn’t help it. After all – parents sometimes will look for ANY amusement when it comes to raising teenagers – we get precious little – stress yes – amusement and fun – No. So I look for every opportunity and snatch it up. Yes I do.
We have given Ashlee the nickname “Miss Precious Perfect” after watching Ben Affleck do a spoof on SNL on Keith Olbermann. His cat was named “Miss precious perfect” and somehow – it just fit Ashlee 🙂 Perfect and Precious and feisty and persnickety and yeah – you get the idea.
So yesterday I went with the said, “Miss Precious Perfect” to her new apartment to look it over and make sure the carpet had been put in and things were in order for Drew to move in. It was on the first floor. It had an unusual smell to the place – but we thought it was just “new carpet” smell. The place seemed under ground and dark to me – although I wasn’t going to say it to Ashlee – just a feeling I had – but I thought – with a lot more light and a good airing out – it would be fine. As we started to look around I ran into a SPIDER WEB and tried to be casual about it and brush it aside – but I could tell that Freaked her out. I tried (with no success) to open some vertical blinds in the living room – and I heard her say, “Mom – what is THIS”? I walked into the kitchen where she was standing looking incredulously at the top of the stove – where there appeared small hard brown “pellets” – several of them – and not just on the stove but on the counter too. She said, “Mom – we have a RAT!!” And looking over the situation said – “No Ashlee – it looks like you have Mice” And being on the first floor with a field behind them – that’s exactly what it was. We found a hole in the wall where the mice had actually CHEWED their way in – next to the new carpet that had been laid.
Well by then “Miss Precious Perfect” would not stay in that apartment anymore – I mean she was really having a melt down. I told her that we had had mice from time to time at our house and Dad just had to set some traps under the sink where they were coming in and it seemed to take care of them – but she just couldn’t DEAL WITH IT. So we took a little trip to see the manager. The manager turned out to be a really sweet young gal who was appalled at the thought of mice being in any of the building – having had no problems before. The maintenance man was immediately called upon and we all went inspecting and they were MORTIFIED! And they quickly gave Ashlee and Drew another apartment on the 2nd floor. It actually turned out to be a very good thing – this apartment is much lighter and brighter and does not have a funny smell either. It’s really darling and I know they will be very happy – and it’s important that our darling “Miss Precious Perfect” be happy – cause if “Momma ain’t happy – ain’t nobody happy” if you know what I mean.
So we have been happily moving things over for them the last 2 days and getting them fixed up – with many discussions and fun arguments about the way the living room furniture should go and where Drew’s computer desk is going to fit, etc. It’s tons of fun and we’re enjoying every moment of their journey together.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Have an awesome day!
