Tiny Dancer

Those of you that grow up in the 60's and 70's will remember and appreciate the early days of Elton John's career with famous hits like “Your Song” and “Bennie and the Jets” – along with “Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me” and “Daniel”. The song “Tiny Dancer” is one of my all time favorites (along with the song “The One” and “Your Song”) and brings back many wonderful memories of my youth.

Bernie Taupin, friend and lyricist songwriting partner to Elton's amazing melodies and piano arrangements is said to have written these words for his wife, Maxine – who really was a ballerina and seamstress traveling with their band. Bernie would see her dancing on the side of the stage and he was inspired to pen these very famous lyrics. They were married in 1971 and Elton was best man. It is also in 1971 that Elton recorded the live performance below.

No matter what your personal opinion is of Elton John, who will have to admit that he was and still is a very talented and accomplished writer and musician – spanning a career of some 45 years. He is also responsible for writing the beautiful musical scores to many Disney animated movies such as “Lion King” which are poignant and timeless.

If you grew up when I did – you will love this “acoustic” performance of the very well known hit. What is your favorite Elton John song? What memories do you have when you hear it played now?

Enjoy this special recording of “Tiny Dancer” – it always makes me smile ūüôā

A Song For You In My Dreams

So last night I had this weird dream in which I was auditioning for something and did not know ANY of the lyrics. I had to stop – it was so embarrassing – and tell the judges that I couldn’t remember any of the song (and I had just been coaching someone else on the very same one!) and that I would have to come back later. The only song I could think of where I knew all the lyrics front and back was “A Song For You” sung by The Carpenter’s. After rehearsing it in my mind a few times – I ran back into the room and said – “I’m ready!” ¬†Because I know it so well – I was able to sing it with clarity and emotion – and NAILED IT.
Below is the song that even in my dreams I am able to bring to a quick recollection.

Have you ever done something in your dreams you would never do when you’re awake – like audition when not ready?

Enjoy and God Bless

I’ve been so many places in my life and time
I’ve sung a lot of songs I’ve made some bad rhyme
I’ve acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we’re alone now and I’m singing this song for you

I know your image of me is what I hope to be
I’ve treated you unkindly but darlin’ can’t you see
There’s no one more important to me
Darlin’ can’t you please see through me
Cause we’re alone now and I’m singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth witholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I’m so much better and if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I’m so much better and if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
We were alone and I was singing this song for you

Happy

One of my favorite Carpenter tunes. ¬†Sadly, this song was never recorded as a single – but a part of an album of other famous songs in the 70’s. ¬†The album was entitled “Horizon” and had other notable songs on it, such as “Desperado” and “Only Yesterday”. ¬†I think I wore the record out – playing it so much! ¬†Every song on the album is GREAT!

Karen Carpenter was one of the best pop voices of our generation and she died way too young.  I remember it well Рhearing the news of her death in my senior year of college.  It was hard to believe РI have always loved her voice and her music.  What an impact she and her brother made on pop music for many to follow after!

Hope you enjoy this blast from the past!

God Bless

I’ve played the game of love before
Too young to know
How hard the fall could be
I never thought I’d try again
Somehow you brought
The gambler out in me
You can deal me in this time around
Even though the odds are high
We’ll play them down
You may be a chance I need to take
And the hand I’m holdin’ says it’s no mistake
Happy is the way I’m feelin’
And I know it comes from being with you
All at once my life is changin’
And I know it’s cause I’m fallin’ in love
With you
Fallin’ in love with you
Fallin’ in love
Fallin’ in love with you
If this is luck then let it ride
If it’s the stars
They’re surely on my side
I’ve never been so satisfied
By love before
For all the times I’ve tried
These beginnings could mean more
(From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/carpenters-lyrics/happy-lyrics.html)
Than the brief affair I bargained for
Little did I know when we began
That my time had come to win a hand
Happy is the way I’m feelin’
And I know it comes from being with you
All at once my life is changin’
And I know it’s cause I’m fallin’ in love
With you
Fallin’ in love with you
Fallin’ in love
Fallin’ in love with you
Please forgive me if I seem
To be walking through a waking dream
Laughter never came so easily
There’s a freedom here that’s new to me
Happy is the way I’m feelin’
And I know it comes from being with you
All at once my life is changin’
And I know it’s cause I’m fallin’ in love
With you
Fallin’ in love with you
Fallin’ in love
Fallin’ in love with you

Shenandoah – Most BEAUTIFUL version EVER!

View of Shenandoah River. South of Front Royal...

This last week a voice student of mine participated in “All State Choir” held in Bellevue ¬†Washington. ¬†This brought back many memories for me – as I also participated in this event when I was a junior in high school. ¬†It was a 3 day event held in Yakima, Washington – a chance to sing with the best of the best in all high schools across Washington, Montana and Northern Idaho.

I have many memories of being involved in this event Рbut my FAVORITE one is this next song.  It is the exact arrangement that our choir did.  If you listen to it all the way through you will hear the melody line and the harmonies sounding like waves on a river Рthe gentle soft rolls, dipping and falling.  At some points in the song, the harmonies rising above the melody line Рand then the beautiful falsetto voices of the men.  I have never heard an arrangement that can equal this one.

I found this explanation of the lyrics and song origin on Wikipedia:

“The lyrics may tell the story of a¬†roving trader¬†in love with the daughter of an¬†Indian chief; in this interpretation, the rover tells the chief of his intent to take the girl with him far to the¬†west, across the¬†Missouri River. Other interpretations tell of a pioneer’s nostalgia for the¬†Shenandoah River Valley¬†in¬†Virginia, or of a Confederate soldier in the¬†American Civil War, dreaming of his country home in Virginia. The¬†provenance¬†of the song is unclear.”

Whatever you think the meaning of the song – I’m sure that you will agree that this is one of the most BEAUTIFUL folk ballads ever written. ¬†I find myself becoming emotional at the sheer simple sweetness of this arrangement – as I remember singing the second soprano part – over 30 years ago. ¬†Come along on my journey as I remember the past.

Hope you enjoy it!

God Bless

Count Your Blessings

Today while on the elliptical, I turned to a live performance of Diana Krall singing with a¬†rhythm¬†ensemble in Rio. ¬†It was so impressive – because like any good performer, they make it seem so easy – when it is anything but that. ¬†She plays jazz piano like I’ve seen only a few do, and has a rich throaty alto voice,¬†reminiscent¬†of other great jazz artists of the 30’s and 40’s.

I was mesmerized by her unique style and grace while performing – and enjoyed immensely the old tunes, such as “Fly me to the Moon” and other¬†signature

tunes from other artists. ¬†The one in particular that caught my attention was a very bluesy version of “I’ve grown accustom to your face” from “My Fair Lady”. ¬†She said it is her husband’s favorite – and it looks as if she can see his face before her when she sings it. ¬†I was actually going to post it, if I could find it on youtube, until the song “Count Your Blessings” from “White Christmas” caught my notice. ¬†Many people have tried to do a “cover” for this great piece and frankly, I thought no one could do it justice like Bing and Rosemary – but I was wrong. ¬†Really wrong. ¬†Diana gives a little something more to the song – and made me a believer – that classic music can be redone – sometimes better than before.

Hope you enjoy it!

There Is Love

Make Your Move (Captain & Tennille album)

Image via Wikipedia

When I was in the 7th grade the song, “Love will keep us together” was at the top of the charts. ¬†It was by the new singing duo¬†“The Captain and Tennille” composed of married couple Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille. ¬†This unique duo made several hits records and a Grammy in 1975 for the song above.

I can remember like it was yesterday, hearing this song over and over on the radio – and seeing them perform it on TV too. ¬†I did “human video” to this song – long before that was popular – and would entertain my family and friends every time the song came on the radio.

When I was in high school – they produced an album that had Noel Paul Stookey‘s famous song on it, “The Wedding Song – There is Love”. ¬†And although I LOVE the original – as heard on the TV show, “The Wonder Years” – I have to admit that there is no better version – or cover that compares to the one that Captain and Tennille did back in the 70’s.

It is a tribute to marriage Рthe commitment and promise.  And it is wonderful to see such a long marriage in a celebrity couple Рknowing they are still together after all these years.

I found this video and thought it was really beautifully put together with pictures of Daryl and Toni over the many years together.

Enjoy and God Bless!

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits, here, has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love,
there is Love.

Well a man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home
They shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning is now and til the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
And there is Love,
there is Love.

Well then what’s to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life?
For if loving is the answer, then who’s the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before?
Oh there is Love,
there is Love.

Oh the marriage of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love,
there is Love.
