On A Clear Day

Driving to Seattle on a clear day is very revealing.  It shows me what I’ve been missing all the other days of the year.  The things that are there, yet hidden.  The Cascade Mountains, for one.  Suddenly I’m aware that my world isn’t so small after all – and just beyond my ability to perceive them lies untold beauty.

How many times are we like a cloudy, rainy day in our thoughts – going along through the day with all the correct motions and intentions, and yet perceiving our world as much smaller than it really is.

I was challenged to take a lesson from nature – open up my eyes and LOOK around me – for things I cannot see with my natural limited senses.  I want to reach far beyond the box of “normal” and see with God eyes all the beauty I’m missing.

I thought of the song “On a clear day you can see forever” and was reminded that it is clearness in both our eyes and thoughts that can give us that unique perspective on things around us.  And I want to always remember what is invisible when the storms of life close in on me and I cannot see.

Dear Lord – help me to hang on to that clear vision from those clear days – and to use it when those tough times close in around me.

When was the last time you saw things with “clear vision”?

I heard the following song on Spotify today from a local Seattle band – and have been writing this article with this tune in my head.

Enjoy and God Bless

Tell me somethin’, give me hope for the night
We don’t know how we feel
We’re just prayin’ that we’re doin’ this right
Though that’s not the way it seems

Summer gone, now winter’s on its way
I will miss the days we had
The days we had
I will miss the days we had
The days we had
Oh, I’ll miss the days we had

Loving, leaving, it’s too late for this now
Such esteem for each has gone
Has time driven our season away?
Cause that’s the way it seems
In the world of the speech that is new
I’ll be back again to stay
Again to stay
I’ll be back again to stay
Again to stay
I’ll be back again to stay

Got To Begin Again

Several weeks ago I watched a biography program on the life of Billy Joel.  It was interesting – many things I did not know about his life and journey that had led him to write such amazing songs.  Every song has a story – each is a chapter of his life.  I think this is why it is so easy to relate to them.  His lyrics are universal and have layers of meaning for him and everyone else who listens.

I don’t remember where I was when I first heard this song, but I was pretty young.  This song was on Billy’s first solo album “Cold Spring Harbor” written in 1971.  This album was his first after a suicide attempt due to depression from a broken relationship.  The lyrics are of a broken man – rising up to find hope and life again.

I know I can relate to lyrics like this.  No, I’ve never been depressed to the point of wanting to end my life – but I have been sad and felt hopeless at times.  I think we all have.  And it is only because of the love of Christ in me – that I have been able to gain my life back.  He has helped me on more than one occasion to see things clearly and with new purpose and understanding.  I can say each new morning, as I leave yesterday behind with all its hurt and disappointments – “I’ve got to begin again”

When was the last time you felt that God helped you to “begin again”?

God Bless

Well so here I am at the end of the road
Where do I go from here?
I always figured it would be like this
Still nothing seems to be quite clear

All the words have been spoken and the prophecy fulfilled
But I just can’t decide where to go
Yes, it’s been quite a day and I should go to sleep
But tomorrow I will wake up and I’ll know

That I’ve got to begin again
Though I don’t know how to start
Yes, I’ve got to begin again
And it’s hard

Well it’s been quite a while since I lifted my head
And I’m sure the light will hurt my eyes
I see the way that I´ve been spendin’ my days
And reality has caught me by surprise

I was dreamin’ of tomorrow so I sacrificed today
And it sure was a grand waste of time
And despite all the truth that’s been thrown in my face
I just can’t get you out of my mind

That I’ve got to begin again
Though I don’t know how start
Yes, I’ve got to begin again
And it’s hard

Your Song

My generation grew up with the music of Elton John.  His music was and still is what I think of when I remember junior high and high school days.  And no matter what you think of him personally, you would have to agree that you also know his music well – and his is a talent that has stood the test of time.

I have many favorite Elton John songs – not the least of which is one of his first hits, the song “Your Song”.  It is hard to “cover” his songs – as Elton’s voice is very unique – but I think we may have found someone who can do one of them justice.  Last night on American Idol – Casey Abrams gave a very tender rendition of this wonderful song and before youtube pulls it off for copyright infringement for the show – I hope if you did not see it last night live – you can watch it here.

Enjoy and God Bless  (and vote for Casey!)

I love the movie “Chocolat” – if you have never seen it – I would encourage you to do so.  It is charming as well as has a universal appeal.  We just finished watching it again and LOVE the characters in this movie and wonderful story it tells.  “Chocolat”  started as a best-selling book by Joanne Harris – then became a stage play and then a movie.  It is very visual and has extraordinary characters that are colorful and full of life.

For me – I would have to say that I love a story that has many different layers to it – touching something deep inside.  The lead character, Vianne (played by the great Juliette Binoche)  is a woman who goes from place to place and tries to make a difference – setting up a chocolate shop in the center of town.  She is seen as a radical because she goes against normal small town traditions.  She believes that life is a celebration and she embraces every moment to do so – from brightening up lives that are broken and lost – to throwing a birthday party for the elderly woman who is her landlord – but also her friend, played by the incredible Judy Dench.  But even though she is  infectious and kind – she is also seen as a threat and outsider. The mayor of the town tries to run her out – but in the end, Vianne and her daughter decide to stay.  She befriends some people from the riverboats or ‘pirates’ as her daughter calls them – and the leader is brilliantly played by Johnny Depp.  (Johnny also writes some of his own music which he plays on the guitar and it is used in the soundtrack).  The young minister of the small French town is torn – but wants to do the right thing for everyone – I believe his quote at the end of the movie is the best one – and it is seen on my video clip below.  Follow the link on the video that says “Watch this on youtube” and you will be able to see the video to get a taste of the movie.

It is amazing how one life can affect so many – and change a whole town. I want to be a life that is like that – don’t you?

Enjoy, and have some chocolate 🙂

Out Here On My Own

This was sung last night on American Idol by fifteen year old, Thia Megia.  I had forgotten about this song – it was from the movie “Fame” and sung by the great Irene Cara.  This is why I love things like American Idol – not only do we get to see up and coming new artists – but are also reminded of great songs in the process – and for me as a music teacher – it’s VERY VALUABLE!  I was in luck too – this great song is available in sheet music – Yay!  You bet I’m going to be having a few students singing it this week!  Hope you enjoy it – it’s one of the very best!

Please click on the video and then follow the link to ‘watch on youtube’.

Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been
Who I am
Do I fit in.
Make believin’ is hard alone,
Out here on my own

We’re always provin’ who we are
Always reachin’ for the risin’ star
To guide me far
And shine me home
Out here on my own

When I’m down and feelin’ blue
I close my eyes so I can be with you
Oh, baby, be strong for me
Baby, belong to me
Help me through
Help me need you

Until the morning sun appears
Making light of all my fears
I dry the tears
I’ve never shown
Out here on my own

When I’m down and feelin’ blue
I close my eyes so I can be with you
Oh, baby, be strong for me
Baby, belong to me
Help me through
Help me need you

Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been
Who I am
Do I fit in
I may not win
But I can’t be thrown
Out here on my own
On my own
