The Perfect Storm

Last week was miserable in the Pacific Northwest with all the snow, ice and then the warmer temperatures and high winds – melting all that snow on trees and caused significant damage and power outages all over the state.  There was a night and day that were LOUD as snow and ice would fall on our roof and branches of trees would snap, crack and gyrate, hitting our roof and sides of our home.  It looked like a war zone in our yard – and the noise was constant.  Our 4 month old puppy, Daisy – did not like it one bit – and we couldn’t explain to her what was going on – or that it was just something normal that happens as things warm up and melt.  She was just FREAKED OUT.

But like any storm, and melting thereof, it soon passed.  Things returned to “normal” around here – at least for her.  Then last night, just before bed – a strong wind-storm swept in and rattled things around AGAIN.  Instead of just ‘hunkering down’ and going to sleep, every little burst of wind and rattle against the sky light and window would cause her to jump to attention and bark – then cower and whimper.  Soon she jumped from the bed and paced from room to room crying and would NOT be consoled – no matter what I did.

Greg was gone, doing windows at his night job.  Finally when he did come home after finishing his work – he found a very frightened but excited puppy – and his presence seemed to comfort her enough that she was able to snuggle up next to him and finally go to sleep for the remainder of the night.

I was reminded of something while she struggled last night during her ‘perfect storm’ – being distracted and frightened by gusts of wind and rain pounding against our house – that I too often struggle against the ‘noise’ of this world – things I can’t comprehend and things that ‘freak me out’ because they are loud, or feel funny, or just scare me.  How often am I distracted by things that are really just ‘normal’ in the big scheme of things.  Is it a reminder of how BIG God is – and how small I am – and I am not meant to understand everything?  Is my “perfect storm” really just a way of coming to Him, like a frightened puppy does when her daddy finally comes home?

There’s safety trusting in our Heavenly Father – who made the wind, rain and storms.  And He has ultimate control, not only of the physical universe – but of the spiritual realm as well – and can calm my own personal storm by just a whisper.

I’m reminded of the storm in the Bible where the disciples and Jesus were on a boat.  Jesus was tired and had gone down below to sleep and a storm whipped up and the disciples were FREAKED OUT thinking they were going to die.  When they awakened sleepy Jesus they said, “Don’t you care that we’re all going to die”  He simply spoke to the storm, “Peace, Be Still” and it was quiet again.  And they were all amazed.

This same Jesus is here to calm the storms in my life and yours.  What seems difficult for us to understand or wrap our minds around – Is NOT too difficult for Him.

And like a puppy who simply can’t comprehend when it is imaginary or real danger  – so we are prone to get distracted by wind and rain in our own world – thinking that it is the BIGGEST STORM we’ve ever had – when all it is – is just noise.

What is your perfect storm?  Are you in one right now?  Does God speak peace to you through the noise and confusion – or are you TOO FREAKED OUT to hear His voice saying, “Peace Be Still” in your own situation?  If you trust Him and know He is in control of the winds, rain and bad storms in your life – then what bad thing can happen?  

Dear Lord – help me to hear your voice through the distractions and noise of my own personal storms.  Help me to see you reaching out your protective arms of peace and strength.  Help me to be soothed by your very presence – drawing me in to snuggle up beside you and just simply trust.

Being Authentic

Yesterday my husband Greg and I had a most interesting and enlightening conversation in the car – while discussing our pastor’s message that morning at church.

Normally I love our pastor’s messages – he is always prepared and seems to have his pulse on what is going on in the lives of his congregation.  This time I felt he was right on – as usual – but must admit, it made me uncomfortable.  Uncomfortable and a little sad – because I simply was not raised with the idea that it was okay to let people know what you are feeling – especially if it is bad, questionable or sad.

I’m from a generation who believed you did NOT let anyone see you sweat – never voiced a fear or regret – or even dared to be sad or depressed about anything.  This was true in our family – and sadly, in the church.

And to further complicate this – about 3 years ago I found myself in a touchy situation with another person and I was going through a bad time – was in a dark hole of sadness and was criticized for posting a SCRIPTURE verse on facebook about being downcast and sad from the PSALMS!  Good grief.  And because I was in leadership – I was not allowed to mourn over a loss – or even hint that I might be having a problem with it.

So it seems there are two very different schools of thought on being authentic:

1.  We should be honest in expressing who we are – how we’re feeling and doing – and not afraid to be real with people and let them know that we struggle like everyone else.

Or

2. Never let people know that you struggle with temptation or sin.  Always be “fine” when asked and only post positive things when on a social network or in person.   Especially leadership.  Because leadership is perfect and never struggles.  We paste on a smile and never let them see us sweat.  We never have problems with our children – we never have illness or marital trouble.  Never.

Well, yesterday – my dear pastor admitted that he struggles.  He admitted that he’s not perfect – in any way.  That he can be and mostly always IS a disappointment to others in his life.  He admitted that he’s a human being capable of temptation and sin like the rest of us.

I loved what he said about those that attend AA meetings.  They have to say their name and then say, “I’m an alcoholic” or “I’m a recovering alcoholic”  and he believes that when we introduce ourselves to others that we should be quick to say, “I’m a recovering sinner“.  Because it’s true.  We are all at level ground.  Even leadership.

Now I’m also aware that people who are lost need to have a role model – and have someone they can look up to.

Here’s the problem with that.  Most of the time – it’s not reality – and the first time that this “seeker” or really lost person has a problem – they fall, because they don’t have it “all together” like the Christian people they encounter at church on a Sunday morning – and they believe they can’t make it.

Instead – I would submit that you do the following:

1.  Stop trying to elevate ourselves by trying to look better than anyone else

2. Have a humble spirit and listening ear

3. Admit that you have problems and temptations like everyone else

4. Admit that you stumble and sometimes want to go the other way

5. Have a testimony of God’s grace and love ready to share with others when they become discouraged.

6. Be a person that is “instant in season” knowing that God places certain people in our path.

7. Do not let anyone tell you  – you can’t express who you are.  Even if that means you have to admit you’ve failed.

I wish I would’ve done that back then – but I’ve learned some valuable lessons about people and myself since then.  I’ve found out that everyone struggles – we are ALL THE SAME when it comes to this.  How you RESPOND is truly the difference – NOT whether or not you get hit with struggles, temptation and sin.  Because if you live long enough – you will.

Here is what you SHOULD do:

1. Respond in an authentic way

2. Admit that you struggle

3. Ask for forgiveness and for strength from the only one who truly understands and can forgive without strings attached.

4. Tell others that it’s only the grace of God that gives anyone ANY hope in times of struggle – including you.

5. Have a fast recovery time from failure to repentance.

6. Be unafraid to be yourself – including gifts of encouragement and hospitality to bring renewed hope to others who may be hurting and struggling.

7. Do NOT let others rob you of your ability to be yourself.

8. Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit – not to man alone.

9. Develop a deep joy in your spirit even in times of trouble.

10. Pray for your leaders – they are human beings too.

Got To Begin Again

Several weeks ago I watched a biography program on the life of Billy Joel.  It was interesting – many things I did not know about his life and journey that had led him to write such amazing songs.  Every song has a story – each is a chapter of his life.  I think this is why it is so easy to relate to them.  His lyrics are universal and have layers of meaning for him and everyone else who listens.

I don’t remember where I was when I first heard this song, but I was pretty young.  This song was on Billy’s first solo album “Cold Spring Harbor” written in 1971.  This album was his first after a suicide attempt due to depression from a broken relationship.  The lyrics are of a broken man – rising up to find hope and life again.

I know I can relate to lyrics like this.  No, I’ve never been depressed to the point of wanting to end my life – but I have been sad and felt hopeless at times.  I think we all have.  And it is only because of the love of Christ in me – that I have been able to gain my life back.  He has helped me on more than one occasion to see things clearly and with new purpose and understanding.  I can say each new morning, as I leave yesterday behind with all its hurt and disappointments – “I’ve got to begin again”

Priceless “In The Moment” Moments

This month marks the 30th anniversary of the last time I was single and living at home.  I went right from my parent’s home at 20 years of age to another way of life – without ever have lived on my own.

And although it worked out for me – I also see great benefits to living on your own before being married.

Both of my children have had opportunities to live on their own after finishing high school.  And although this can be hard, financially – I believe the lessons learned while living on your own are very valuable.  Some things just can’t be taught while living at home.

With our daughter – she was so determined that she would make it – and it took two jobs for her to do so – she’s been very proud of herself that she was completely self sufficient by the time she was 20 years old.  She learned a lot of about room-mates and finances that she’s never forgotten – and when it came time for her to get married – she was already very disciplined with money and her work ethic.  She’s one of the hardest working young women I know.

Shawn, who will be 20 in October – has moved to California to pursue a music education and hopefully a career with his music training.  He lives with room-mates in Burbank and has struggled to maintain his rent with only a part-time job.  We are grateful he got a job, when so few are available.  And we’re also thankful that his loan money will cover his tuition AND his housing this fall.  But it’s still tough to make the rent and pay for things like food – until then.

Experiences like this are so valuable.  And he will look back on these times as “the good old days” before real bills, a wife and children to support.  All of this – priceless in the big scheme of things to come.

As I chatted on the phone with him last night – I reminded him that this too shall pass – and his present circumstance is what great songs and writings are made of  🙂  Maybe not while he’s struggling – but sometime after as he looks back…

Living “in the moment” – trying to be present – even during hard times of struggle. Being available in the mind.  On purpose and on task.  Learning to get by on very little – to be engaged and still positive about life.  This is what living “in the moment” is all about.

Are you alway “in the moment”?  Does your mind wander to “better times” either in the past – or somewhere in the future?  Can you be content and very present?  Now – today?  Especially when things are not ideal?  And you may be struggling?  Can you find the priceless of the here and now?  Knowing this moment will pass you by – and be no more?

New Dream

like searching in a fog

chasing after

an endless mist

straining for

that unattainable someone

or something

thinking that it would satisfy

what’s deep within

heart-sick and weary

all my efforts

came up empty

and my searching

and reaching

brought no relief

for I found

that in the searching

it was me that I found instead

alone and empty

sad and confused

“Is what I seek

my dream only?

never satisfied

why do

I continue to pursue?

Are my “dreams” just those I make up

bringing emptiness

and endless struggle

instead of fulfillment

and relief?”

And yet I searched for you

my unobtainable someone

and something

that threatened to destroy

and devour me

The one I craved

the things I craved

could be my undoing

and the searching

and dreaming for them

like a slow death

And at the end of the road

I was still there

running on empty

defeated and broken…

It was when I was at my weakest

and tired of running after

and insisting on my own way

that He came

and I heard

a still small voice

and in my confusion

and tears

which caused me to slow down

be still

and listen

that I heard Him

that voice changed me

as He reached in

and held the broken

and confused me

and finally I don’t need to know

all the reasons for before

I reluctantly surrender

and replace

all the running

and searching

for something unknown

instead of something

that does not satisfy

and begin a new path

with His dreams

and plans for me

and at the end of the road

there is no disappointment

and emptiness

or brokenness

and I have almost 

vanished from view

even though

my selfishness and pride

are still there

but they are covered

and kept in check

and it is He that is waiting

giving me

a new dream

which fulfills

and satisfies

instead of

all the things

I wanted

and thought I needed

He is giving me

much more

than I could ever dream

as He replaces my will

with new people

new things

and a new dream

What’s Making Your Noise?

Yesterday our youth pastor, Jeremy spoke on a passage of scripture in Ephesians 3.  It is the prayer of blessing.  But it wasn’t so much that prayer that we have all heard a million times in our lives that stood out to me – it was what he said about paying attention to God that made me sit up and take notice.  He talked about things in our lives getting the most attention – the things that are maybe not the most important – but that which make the most  noise.

So I ask you this – as I ponder this same question for myself.  What is creating the most “noise” in your life right now?

Does God allow the “noise” to see if you’re really paying attention to what is important?

Do you still hear Him in the midst of all that “noise”?

What does your “noise” sound like?  Do you spend your time trying to quiet the noise and “put out tiny fires” instead of really concentrating and centering down to the quiet still small voice in your heart?

When Is It MY Turn? Please Pass The Teddy Bear!

A couple of years ago Greg and I attended a counseling retreat – that concentrated on intense communication between married couples.  We got to know several couples at this retreat in all stages of marriage – who had lost the ability to effectively communicate.  The retreat was led by a couple of counselors who had many suggestions to encourage the communication and health between spouses.

One such technique was using a teddy bear.  The spouse that had possession of the teddy bear – could do ALL the talking without interruption.   It was a “safe zone” for the spouse that held the bear.   And as long as they held it – they could do all the talking.  After they were done – they would pass the bear to their spouse and their spouse would be given the same treatment while holding the bear – no interruption – no fear.  This required intense listening – and validation to the partner who was speaking.  The idea being of course, that partner with the bear would affirm the other and say, “I hear what you’re saying….” or “I understand how you could feel that way…” thus verifying that they really heard – and not just sitting there thinking of something else.

Until last night – we had not used this communication technique and had almost forgotten about it.  We were having what you might call a “difference of opinion” and I could see that the “discussion” was going no where – no one really listening to the other at all.  No – in fact – we were both talking at each other – no positive interaction or exchange.  The discussion had pressed some “fear” buttons and immediately we went into a very familiar “dance” of words and programmed responses brought on by what we were interpreting as non-validation.  It was easy for us to slip into, “What???  I did not say that!” or “You ALWAYS say that”  “You’re not hearing me” or “That did NOT happen like that” etc.  This went on for some time until I remembered the retreat – grabbed a teddy bear that usually sits on the pink wing-backed chair in our entry way and grasped him firmly.   I brought him into the family room where Greg was sitting on the couch and announced, “I have the teddy bear”.

Of course this brought smiles and chuckles of recognition from him – but he continued to talk, saying, “HEY – I wasn’t through!”  “You know the rules”  I said, “The one in possession of the teddy bear – gets to speak”.

And so we continued in this fashion – smiling the whole time – but also realizing that there is something to this after all.  A “safe zone” where the one in possession can speak freely without interruption – forcing the other to really listen and NOT say anything.  It forces one to “button the lip” as it were.

It was amazing what happened after that – maybe the mood was different – maybe we both just started listening more – I don’t know, but I do know that we were able to dig a little deeper into some past issues that had been lying dormant – all with the bear on our laps.  And it was not long before the real issue came out and we were able to identify it – with no fear – only validation and recognition.

There is something about a teddy bear.  Ask any child who has one.  They are sweet – and you want to hug them.  They make you smile and feel like a child again.  And you just cannot be mad at a person who is holding one – try it and see if you can!

There are many methods to resolving marital conflict – this is just one that seems to really work – because it is a visual reminder that unless you are holding the bear – you cannot talk – you have to listen, be supportive and validate the one talking.  And I suppose that is at the heart of most miscommunication – wanting to be validated and feel heard.

Next time you have a disagreement – try bringing a teddy bear into the room with you – and suggest that your spouse hold it – and then really listen as they talk.  It will amaze  you as you feel the tension in the room lighten up and you find listening skills you never knew either of you had 🙂

I wrote the following more than a year ago and thought it would be fun bring it around again for all of you new readers 🙂

Well it’s finally happened. I’m hot. Not like that. The other kind of hot – you know the temperature kind.

It’s been happening for about 3 or 4 years – starting with migraine headaches right out of the blue – sending me to the doctor’s for a shot and vomiting all the way there. Then the really emotional days hit. I have been emotional my whole life – but during this time it was ramped up a bit. I cry at anything. Believe me – you wouldn’t want to test out that theory.

I don’t have to wear jackets outside even when it’s cold – and in the truck or car I need the vent on full blast or the window open or I feel sick,

I am my own personal heating system.

I admit it. I have been in somewhat of a denial over these very troubling ‘signs’ of midlife. It means – I have to give in – can’t excuse it away – it means – my body and emotions are changing and I must realize the sad truth – I’m getting older.

Last week I was at the doctor’s for my yearly exam and she asked me if I feel differently – other than the things I had said above. To me those were vague at best – not really the real thing at all – until she asked me about nighttime. She asked, ‘do you throw the covers off’? And I had to admit that yes, I do.

Last night I not only threw the covers off – but blamed my sweet sleeping husband for NOT opening the window wide enough. I’m like, ‘are you KIDDING ME!!! I’m in midlife here – WORK WITH ME!!’ And I got up and put a short-sleeved shirt on instead of the long-sleeved one I had on to begin with – and Greg opened every window he could find.

We laughed about it this morning – and it’s nice that we can laugh about it. I believe that other than this – I am going to breeze on by this little hiccup in the road of my mental and emotional state. And maybe someday soon I’ll be ‘normal’ and even put a sweater or jacket on again.

Even the commercial and retail world seem to agree with me – as many ‘boomers’ are now in mid-life and beyond. These will give you a good laugh and make your day!

Fighting Fair

Greg and I had an interesting verbal “sparring match” this morning.  It is very healthy to have these – as I have in recent years, discovered – and yet it is still somewhat foreign soil to venture in to the murky dark abyss of this type of “healthy exchange”.  We are still pretty new to resolving our differences this way.  Even after all the years we’ve been married.  It’s easier to say nothing than to deal with some things.

We’ve been reading one of Erma Bombeck’s hilarious books on relationships and in one chapter she writes about a very humorous exchange between she and her husband where she asks him, ‘Linda and Joe have meaningful conversations – why don’t we have any meaningful conversations’?  To which they both agreed, finally that surface conversations were safer in the long run.

Sometimes meaningful conversations between men and women are at crossed purposes and it seems easier to keep it simple.    I mean, since a man is NOT a woman – by any stretch of the imagination – it is difficult to get him to THINK like one.  I believe a meaningful conversation for my husband or any other guy friend of mine would be full of facts and information – sparring about this and that – displaying and ‘peacocking’ ambitions and accomplishments – news issues or politics – or for the Christian man – a debate on scripture or strategy on church leadership and such.

But women would rather talk about how they feel about issues – relationships and don’t care so much about the facts and figures.  And if it’s a news-worthy topic – it’s usually how people feel that are being affected – world events that talk about people and not just strategy and politics for strategy and politic’s sake.  Arguing or debating is not high on our list of ‘fun things’ to do.

Don’t get me wrong – I love a good sparring match – when it’s fun and harmless – debating about this or that – when it’s done right with no personal ‘shots’ or humiliating comments from the other party – and I can usually hold my own with any man on many topics – but it is difficult finding the balance in the sparring – when it’s your husband.

For some strange reason – over time, at least for us – we know how to do the “dance” of our relationship.  The things and words that push all of our buttons – and then have a hard time knowing how to defuse a situation after it IS into more than just a “healthy discussion”.  We know it’s important to not accuse and say things like, “YOU always says this” or “YOU make me feel lousy about myself when you do or say that” – instead we know to say, “I feel like bad when you say this” or “I am not liking what I think you are meaning by that” but alas.  Often times a discussion can turn south WAY before the intentions for saying the right thing is properly communicated.

I have learned how to have healthy and “meaningful conversations” with my husband out of necessity and out of survival – but sometimes we are not always successful – and occasionally – even we blow it.

Today I did not “stuff” my feelings as I would have done in years gone by – I spoke it right out!  It was a pretty stupid meaningless thing – nothing earth-shaking at all.  But it did have repercussions – as any discussion like this will.  And in frustration I heard myself saying these words, “Why can’t you be more like a WOMAN”?  Yeah right.  Really clever.  The problem is this:  Greg is my best friend – and he’s clearly NOT a woman.   He is a man.  He is also my husband.  So many problems with this arrangement – so much potential ammunition to want to KILL HIM at times – because he is A DUMB GUY!!

And so our dance continues.  I am learning to speak out when things bother me (this is so NOT like me in the past) and he is learning to dial it back a pinch when he has that incredible little imp that sits on his shoulder.  The Brat.  It’s not perfect – but it’s a life-long journey that we call marriage.

I suppose this is what they call “fighting fair” – having a healthy and meaningful exchange of words – really listening to what the other person is saying – learning what to say and what NOT to say to diffuse a situation and most of all – to remember to show a lot of love a grace when personal ego and pride are affected.  When your husband is a man and also your best friend – it’s worth the dance.

My Neti Pot

Yes I use a Neti Pot.  It has been a life-saver with this bad cold that I developed this last week – after being run down, tired, off my normal schedule and yes – exposed to the virus from other students and parents because of the close quarters doing a theater production.  Cold’s usually stay clear away from me – and normally I am prepared for them – or rather, usually I have better defense against them coming.

When students come into my home each week I am ready for them with my anti-bacterial gel and I unapologetically squeeze some their hands and make them rub it in – it protects both them and me. This has kept me and my family safe from outside germs quite successfully for years – in fact I can’t even remember the last time I even had a head cold!

But that was before this last week’s production and MANY sick people all in the same place – breathing the same air.  And it is impractical to go around insisting on everyone using anti-bacterial gel on their hands – although I’m sure we could have posted a few students around the lobby with the gel in their hands – willing and able to squirt a little into each hand that came in.  But even then, it may have been too late.  Can’t you just see it?  “Here’s your program and a little squirt of gel so you won’t infect us – now enjoy the show!”

So with this cold I have been using my Neti Pot (a little pot of warm salt water) to flush out any and all clinging mucus from my nasal cavities – and prevent it from getting too happy up there and starting a sinus infection.

I’m almost sure that there is a practical application regarding Neti Pots – to flush out the bad, harmful or sinful inclinations that we all posses.  But I am at a loss.  And since one has to be pretty sick – and realize that they are sick to use one – the application might fall short anyway.

You see spiritually – the battle is with ourselves – understanding and admitting that we are unable, and inadequate to help ourselves.  We need the help of our Great Physician – the one who made us.  We need His help to purge us and go deep into the areas of our heart and soul – cleansing us from those things that linger and make us spiritually sick.

In Psalm 147:3 the psalmist says, “He makes the broken-hearted well and puts oil on their wounds”

So I guess you might say – He is our Neti Pot – and He offers a warm healing balm of oil over our soul – to all who are broken and sadweary and lostsick and dying.  Jesus is the only healing balm you need.

Do you feel lost?  Run down?  Weary and exhausted?  Rest in Him today and allow Him to pour out that oil of loving kindness and strength today.  His healing is permanent – it is for your sick soul – the part of you that lives forever and never dies. Won’t you have a little talk with Him today?
