Are You Alone?

I am at a Starbucks out of town, while on a road trip with Greg. I noticed when walking in this place that it was unusually crowded. I peered around for a vacant table – and then I saw it. The only empty table in the place. A lonely LARGE table. This table holds eight people. It is empty. There are many smaller tables around it – all full. It is awkward. Little old me at such a large table. By myself. Alone.

Throughout the years I have witnessed people alone at a table for two in restaurants. I'm sure they are uncomfortable. They avoid eye contact, are often reading a book or a magazine and trying to “appear” busy. At the few times I have found myself alone out in public having to eat alone at a table for two – it is very awkward. I try not to feel that way – but the society in which we live – dictates that to be alone means something dreadful and sad. You feel people watching you – you want to scream, “I'm only alone because I am choosing it” but it is no use. Alone is alone. No matter how you slice it.

Many people find themselves alone at different seasons in life. Usually it is not planned, can happen suddenly and takes them by surprise. Being alone is an unpleasant prospect. Being alone out in public – even scarier. Especially for women.

I have often marveled at how people, once in a long-term relationship and suddenly alone, can begin again. They takes the necessary steps to go out in public again – and even after time *gasp* – begin the thought process of dating again. *Double gasp* The first time around is scary enough for anyone – why oh WHY would anyone choose to do it again? – I've always thought. But at the same time – I am amazed and warmed by those who have not only taken steps to not be alone – but actually find someone else. The chances for 'love the second time around' are really great!! And I have witnessed this marvel – many times over the years. Usually it is a long time friend, who also finds them-self alone or in this technically advanced society – through online dating sites.

The holidays can be wonderful – but also very lonely. Especially for those who have lost a mate, child or friend. There are so many sad songs surrounding the holidays. Some of the best lyrics involve sadness and loss. You would have to be intensely naive – to think that this season is automatically joyful for all.

If you are alone this season, the best thing you can do is get out and be with people. Attend a church service, holiday concert or an invite to a Christmas party. You may find that the warmth of friendship is your anchor and will bring you additional courage in the months to come. And because you are alone – your relationship with others in your life will become much more precious and you will now have time to renew old ties. If you have The Lord in your life – you know how much of a comfort it is to have a friend that “sticks closer than a brother” and who knows it all. He will become more dear to you during this time.

If you know someone who is alone for the first time this season – invite them over. Be a friend. Look around. Notice the ones who are alone in your church services. Get involved. Show gentleness and compassion. Spread love around. Sprinkle kindness. Stir in humor. Fold in understanding. Bring true meaning to the season this year. Make someone's Christmas truly special. You may be the only person who can.

God Bless

Are You Happy?

The Sermon of the Beatitudes (1886-96) by Jame...

Image via Wikipedia

Heard another great message from our pastor, Stephen Collins yesterday morning.  He has begun a series on “The Beatitudes”.  This question was asked:

Are you happy?  Is this really what you want?  Will that alone satisfy you long-term?  When feelings change and emotions are fickle?

The most profound statement came in the middle of the message.  ‘When we settle for just being happy – we aim too low’ – missing out on God’s blessing in our lives’. Sometimes, God doesn’t want us to be happy.  Sometimes there are lessons in the ‘gift’ of pain and hardship in our lives.  The most significant changes in our heart and character come when life is not ‘happy’ – but dark and sad.

For me – I know this is a true statement – and sums up just what I have learned and lived through over the past 2 years – as I grew and discovered God’s ‘gift’ of hard times, both personally, in my relationships  and spiritually.

If we accept the ‘gift’ in the way it is intended – then God can do His greatest work in us – bringing us more than just ‘happiness’ – but a blessed and meaningful life And sometimes what may feel like the end of the world – may only be the beginning of a great and rewarding life.

Are you happy?  Is that what you really want?  Or do you want more?  Do you want God’s rich blessing poured out in your life.  I know I do.  I want to reap the reward of choosing to do the right thing – when doing that goes against everything I may be feeling.  It means doing right by people and relationships – and being the right person. Living by character and integrity – rather than emotions.  And when I do stray away and don’t choose what is right – at least initially – then knowing how to get back on the right path – hard as it is – to reconcile and fix it – and keep my heart open.

I am more than happy.  I am blessed. I understand this now – but it took a couple of hard lessons to really believe it.  I’m blessed with a wonderful family, a man who loves me with everything that he is –  and friendships that mean everything to me.  What I lost – God has richly replaced – and has taught me a great many lessons in the process.  Things I could not have learned – just by following my heart and emotions because I ‘wanted to be happy’.  When we see life as a journey – and know that there is a much bigger picture than just personal happiness – we will not want to aim so low.

Are you happy?  Are you wishing for more than that?  I invite you to share in some hard times – and think of them as a ‘gift’ – an added blessing to enhance your character and integrity.  I wish you more than happiness, my friend.  I wish you a life of blessing and purpose – a holy calling in which you give up ‘personal happiness’ for something richer and deeper.  To see people the way that God sees them.  To understand there is a lost world out there – and your unique gifts have placed you right where you are – to influence those that He has entrusted to you.  Use them today.

Be more than just ‘happy’ – be blessed and be a blessing to those in your life.

I Am Ready…Still…

The following is taken from a blog post one year ago tomorrow.  It was heartfelt and hopeful and I still am that girl – waiting for the day…one year later…
It is important to stop, reflect and look back – so that we can see how much change and growth has happened to us over time – if we allow God to work on us – soften our hearts and let things go that we can’t fix.
It is also important to learn the things that can’t be fixed and that it’s sometimes a blessing in disguise to NOT get the things you ask for.  And that is the hardest lesson of all.  To know that God sometimes heals through things not given – and through other people and relationships we encounter on our journey.  It has taken me a long time to learn this – but I’m so glad to be finally getting it.

I am beginning

to see

a new beginning

a new challenge

that is before me

a door I must walk through

but

It scares me

It is the unknown

I don’t know

how it will turn out

In my heart

I can see

things

and relationships

as God sees them

whole

and healthy

A meeting of the minds

and hearts

joining of “like” spirits

wanting understanding

and reconciliation

I am ready

I am waiting

Waiting for God’s timing

Waiting for God’s healing

I am ready

I can already see it

but

I am afraid

It is the scary unknown

Help me Lord to be ready when final healing takes place for me and all those in my life – and for anyone reading this today.  I pray that our hearts will be open for you to do a special and deep work in our lives today so that you will be glorified as the only true relationship healer.  I pray a special blessing on my readers today that you will give them a wonderful day –  full of love, hope and promise of tomorrow.

God Bless.

You Don’t Always Get What You Want

You don’t always get what you want – but you get what you need

The Rolling Stones

This scripture below is my son’s favorite scripture verse – he loves it in the NIV but I love the Message Bible:

Ephesians 3:20 (Message Bible)

20-21God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.

I love this passage because it is a gentle reminder of God’s nature – at work in and through our lives.

Just like a child who requests a special gift for a Christmas present from his parents – so we often make our requests known to God.  Only with us – we are so limited in our thinking – seeing and perspective on life that we don’t always know what to ask for.  Luckily, for our sake – we don’t always get what we want – or what we think we want.  But we DO get what we need.

Ever have a reminder of a past event in your life?  An event that you thought at the time was the end of the world?  A lost relationship, job or situation?  And like a child – you cried and begged God to fix it – heal it – or turn it around?  Only to find out weeks, months or years later that it was the best thing NOT to have had your way?  The great lyricist, Cindy Morgan – said in one of her songs, “heartaches are often blessings in disguise”.  How true this is.  But we DON’T often see it that way at the time.  We need perspective and space away from the event to determine this in our own hearts and lives.

No we don’t always get what we want.  We can fuss and fume – rant and rave – cry, scream and stomp our feet – even have accusatory arguments with God and still…we don’t always get what we want.  But here is a guarantee that you can take to the bank:  You will always get what you need.

And part of that guarantee is that not only will we get what we need – but far above that – far above what we could even ask or dream for ourselves.  Because He made us – knows us – is concerned about the daily concerns of our daily existence – we know for sure that He has something very wonderful planned for us – to surprise us – much like a parent will surprise their child with a special gift the child was not even asking for or expecting!  “Our wildest dreams”.

What are your wildest dreams?  Do you still have them?  Have you stopped dreaming?  Do you hesitate to ask God anything good for your life – because of past disappointments?  Because, maybe – you didn’t get what you wanted?  And you failed to see the “bigger picture” of what you needed instead?

I love that God works gently in and through us – doing a deep work within us. Working to give us – not only what we need – but to far surpass our wildest expectations!

Dream BIG – Live with great expectation – Dare to ask far above and beyond – allow Him to do that deep work in your life – to produce in you the ability to see beyond your “wants” – to just satisfy the temporary.  Ask Him for a vision of your life – as He sees you – and wants to bless you.  Make 2010 a year of victory – and no regrets.

Do it.  Do it today.

God Bless
