A Family Thing

I had the opportunity to see the movie “A Family Thing” last night with Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones.  And while the premise of the movie was fascinating, a grown man finds out that his natural mother had been the black woman who helped around the house after a brief affair with his own white father – it is near the end of the movie that the “brother” played by James Earl Jones, delivers a very moving and poignant speech.

He tells how he believes that there are people in everyone’s life that are there to save them.  He acknowledges that every man has an opportunity to be “saved” – if he wants to be “saved”.  And he tells about the three people who “saved” him.

The first was by his Aunt – who when his mother died in childbirth giving birth to the baby, who was the result of the affair with the white man – took him in and raised him like her own.  His Aunt saved his life.

The second was by a judge who when in his teens starting getting into trouble and began stealing cars.  This judge said you can either go to prison – or join the military.  He went into the marines – that judge gave him a second chance and ultimately saved his life.

The third was his wife.  He met her some years later when he came home from the war.  He was free, but unfortunately he brought the war with him – drinking heavily.  He said it was this women, who later became his wife – who saved him.  It was like a curtain came off a very dark room.  And he could suddenly see again.  She rescued him from a very dark place and believed in him – and it saved his life.

How many people do you have in your lifetime that have impacted you in such a way – that you can claim what James Earl Jones character did in that movie – that these people actually saved you? Got you out of a bad place – brought new meaning to your life – gave you a second chance?

We all know that with God – He does this every day. He is in the rescuing business.  But I also believe that we need to be open to His touch in our lives. And I believe that He uses people on our journey to come along side of us and hold us up when we’re slipping – and walk beside us, giving hope and encouragement through a kind word, laugh or smile – to show that He has not forgotten about us – even in our darkest hour.  These people are as necessary to our journey as breathing.  And they are His gift to us.

I am praying that you will be “saved” by someone when you least expect it – when you think nobody cares – when you are close to shutting down and giving up.  Be open to receive God’s greatest gift of friendship today.  And maybe you will be called on to “save” someone else.

God Bless
