My Unspoken Thoughts

Psalm 19:14

Living Bible (TLB)

14 May my spoken words and unspoken thoughts be pleasing even to you, O Lord my Rock and my Redeemer.

I recently ran across a Bible app for my iPhone and iPad that is called “one verse a day”.  Every morning without fail, I get a notice of another encouraging verse to meditate on.  Sometimes in my crazy business, reading the Bible through from one end to another in “several easy steps” – is just not an option.  I get bogged down with words and language that don’t mean anything to me personally.  Stories and situations that are interesting the first time I read them, but not so much any more.

I remember years ago hearing a message concerning this thought.  The speaker was convinced that it is not the amount of scripture that is read on a daily, weekly or even yearly basis – but that it is the content of what we read, absorbed and meditated on – that is of the real importance.  Scripture that can come alive by simply allowing those words to inspire and change.  Finding a fresh new way of applying two or three thoughts – one simple passage.

If you are like me – you aren’t concerned about winning any contests when it comes to Bible reading and prayer.  I want what I meditate on and what I pray about to be simple and straight forward.  A conversation with a trusted friend.  One that keeps confidences and assures with tender love and attention.  I am not always wanting everything that I think about to be out in the open.  It is private.  I have private things I ponder and reflect on.  I have worries and insecurities.  I don’t often share these – even with God.  But even though I do not – He still knows and understands.  It is because of His great love demonstrated to me, that I trust Him with those unspoken things.

Words spoken carry weight.  Especially those things I wish I could take back.  Things in emails or in letters over the years.  Once they are written or spoken – they are out there.  It’s too late.  Often times things written in the heat of anger or emotion that had no business being written down or said.  Can you relate?  I am so glad that the unspoken thoughts are just that.  Unspoken.  Private.  Safe.  And still – I am held accountable for them too.  I can look really pious on the outside.  I mean – really spiritual, and yet have a dark unspoken side.  You probably know what I’m talking about.  Or you’ve seen too many times when a seemingly “spiritual” person has a little heat applied to them.  The real them comes to the surface.  It can be disheartening and even crushing – until we remember that we are all about two decisions away from sin.  We are all human and capable of great darkness if left up to ourselves.  Lord help us!

I heard a great quote today.

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way (s)he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.   Maya Angelou

May we ever strive to make our unspoken and spoken things match.  The way we think be the truthful way we live and speak.

Amen

God Bless

Are You Alone?

I am at a Starbucks out of town, while on a road trip with Greg. I noticed when walking in this place that it was unusually crowded. I peered around for a vacant table – and then I saw it. The only empty table in the place. A lonely LARGE table. This table holds eight people. It is empty. There are many smaller tables around it – all full. It is awkward. Little old me at such a large table. By myself. Alone.

Throughout the years I have witnessed people alone at a table for two in restaurants. I'm sure they are uncomfortable. They avoid eye contact, are often reading a book or a magazine and trying to “appear” busy. At the few times I have found myself alone out in public having to eat alone at a table for two – it is very awkward. I try not to feel that way – but the society in which we live – dictates that to be alone means something dreadful and sad. You feel people watching you – you want to scream, “I'm only alone because I am choosing it” but it is no use. Alone is alone. No matter how you slice it.

Many people find themselves alone at different seasons in life. Usually it is not planned, can happen suddenly and takes them by surprise. Being alone is an unpleasant prospect. Being alone out in public – even scarier. Especially for women.

I have often marveled at how people, once in a long-term relationship and suddenly alone, can begin again. They takes the necessary steps to go out in public again – and even after time *gasp* – begin the thought process of dating again. *Double gasp* The first time around is scary enough for anyone – why oh WHY would anyone choose to do it again? – I've always thought. But at the same time – I am amazed and warmed by those who have not only taken steps to not be alone – but actually find someone else. The chances for 'love the second time around' are really great!! And I have witnessed this marvel – many times over the years. Usually it is a long time friend, who also finds them-self alone or in this technically advanced society – through online dating sites.

The holidays can be wonderful – but also very lonely. Especially for those who have lost a mate, child or friend. There are so many sad songs surrounding the holidays. Some of the best lyrics involve sadness and loss. You would have to be intensely naive – to think that this season is automatically joyful for all.

If you are alone this season, the best thing you can do is get out and be with people. Attend a church service, holiday concert or an invite to a Christmas party. You may find that the warmth of friendship is your anchor and will bring you additional courage in the months to come. And because you are alone – your relationship with others in your life will become much more precious and you will now have time to renew old ties. If you have The Lord in your life – you know how much of a comfort it is to have a friend that “sticks closer than a brother” and who knows it all. He will become more dear to you during this time.

If you know someone who is alone for the first time this season – invite them over. Be a friend. Look around. Notice the ones who are alone in your church services. Get involved. Show gentleness and compassion. Spread love around. Sprinkle kindness. Stir in humor. Fold in understanding. Bring true meaning to the season this year. Make someone's Christmas truly special. You may be the only person who can.

God Bless

A Solid Resting Place

Sunset - 6 Feb 2008

I am always comforted by scripture – the many passages that speak to me and help me find that solid resting place for my weary mind – as I am surrounded by the cares and sorrows of this world.

As I look ahead at the new year – I am reminded once again of God’s faithfulness and love shown to me over the last year and all of my life.  I have gone through things and have watched those around me be touched by sorrow, joy, happiness, pain and regret.  But in the midst of all of it – good and bad, He was always there.  That still small voice that always covers me and won’t let me go.  And I am so thankful that I know Him – and that He is a merciful God.

My prayer is that you too will find Him a solid and reliable friend – in times of joy and in times of trouble.  That you will find a reason and purpose for your life – and that you will allow Him to show you and help you with all those unanswered questions.

Below are some scriptures of comfort and hope – as we look forward to the new year.
