Are You Alone?

I am at a Starbucks out of town, while on a road trip with Greg. I noticed when walking in this place that it was unusually crowded. I peered around for a vacant table – and then I saw it. The only empty table in the place. A lonely LARGE table. This table holds eight people. It is empty. There are many smaller tables around it – all full. It is awkward. Little old me at such a large table. By myself. Alone.

Throughout the years I have witnessed people alone at a table for two in restaurants. I'm sure they are uncomfortable. They avoid eye contact, are often reading a book or a magazine and trying to “appear” busy. At the few times I have found myself alone out in public having to eat alone at a table for two – it is very awkward. I try not to feel that way – but the society in which we live – dictates that to be alone means something dreadful and sad. You feel people watching you – you want to scream, “I'm only alone because I am choosing it” but it is no use. Alone is alone. No matter how you slice it.

Many people find themselves alone at different seasons in life. Usually it is not planned, can happen suddenly and takes them by surprise. Being alone is an unpleasant prospect. Being alone out in public – even scarier. Especially for women.

I have often marveled at how people, once in a long-term relationship and suddenly alone, can begin again. They takes the necessary steps to go out in public again – and even after time *gasp* – begin the thought process of dating again. *Double gasp* The first time around is scary enough for anyone – why oh WHY would anyone choose to do it again? – I've always thought. But at the same time – I am amazed and warmed by those who have not only taken steps to not be alone – but actually find someone else. The chances for 'love the second time around' are really great!! And I have witnessed this marvel – many times over the years. Usually it is a long time friend, who also finds them-self alone or in this technically advanced society – through online dating sites.

The holidays can be wonderful – but also very lonely. Especially for those who have lost a mate, child or friend. There are so many sad songs surrounding the holidays. Some of the best lyrics involve sadness and loss. You would have to be intensely naive – to think that this season is automatically joyful for all.

If you are alone this season, the best thing you can do is get out and be with people. Attend a church service, holiday concert or an invite to a Christmas party. You may find that the warmth of friendship is your anchor and will bring you additional courage in the months to come. And because you are alone – your relationship with others in your life will become much more precious and you will now have time to renew old ties. If you have The Lord in your life – you know how much of a comfort it is to have a friend that “sticks closer than a brother” and who knows it all. He will become more dear to you during this time.

If you know someone who is alone for the first time this season – invite them over. Be a friend. Look around. Notice the ones who are alone in your church services. Get involved. Show gentleness and compassion. Spread love around. Sprinkle kindness. Stir in humor. Fold in understanding. Bring true meaning to the season this year. Make someone's Christmas truly special. You may be the only person who can.

God Bless

Christmas Angel

christmas angle

I watched this movie last week on GMC.  I didn’t expect to like it – after all, most of the “Christmas movies” are too sweet and very precious – but at the same time a real turn-off for those of us who live in the real world.

This one was different.  A single mom played by Teri Polo.  A little girl with a big heart.  An elderly sick neighbor who still blessed others even though she was suffering.  Bullies and misunderstandings, not enough money and kindness of strangers.  Life.  And wishes and prayers that must be left up to God.  Great story line and wonderful actors.

I highly recommend it for you and your family this Christmas season.

God Bless

Day 4 – Christmas Lights by Coldplay

Candle

I’ve always LOVED the band Coldplay. My son introduced them to me about 4 years ago and I’ve been a fan ever since. I’m always drawn to acoustic piano as a base in a band and these guys are so talented.

This morning I woke up – turned on my Christmas list through Spotify and this was the first song to greet me.  I love the poignant lyrics and melancholy sadness that sometimes surrounds people during the holiday season.  And since we also have no snow many times in Seattle during this season, it seemed like something I could also relate to.  There’s something about snow that just makes you feel like Christmas.

I hope you will enjoy this song as much as I do.

Happy Thanksgiving – and God Bless!

Christmas night, another fight
Tears we’ve cried a flood
Got all kinds of poison in
Of poison in my blood
I took my feet to Oxford street
Trying to right or wrong
Just walk away those windows
But I can’t believe she’s gone
When your still waiting for the snowfall
Doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all
A group of candles on me are flickering
Oh they flicker and they flow
And I am up here holding on to all those chandeliers of hope
And like some drunken in this city
I am go singing out of tune
Singing how I always loved you darling
And how I always will
But when your still waiting for the snowfall
Doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all
Still waiting for the snow to fall
It doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all
Those Christmas Lights
Light up the street
Down where the sea and city meet
May all your troubles soon be gone
Ohh Christmas Lights keep shining on
Those Christmas Lights
Light up the street
Maybe they bring here back to me
Then all my troubles will be gone
Ohh Christmas Lights keep shining on
Ohh Christmas Lights
Light up the streets
Light up the fireworks in me
May all your troubles soon be gone
Those Christmas Lights keep shining on

Day 1 – One Special Night

This movie is one we have owned and watched for several years now.  It is a beautiful story of friendship, love and family.  Julie Andrews and James Garner do an amazing job of bringing this sweet story to life – two people forced together because of a blizzard – and then as they get to know each other – something wonderful happens to them both.

This is a must see for the holiday season.  Below is a music video from some of the scenes of the movie – and below that a behind the scenes look and interviews with Julie Andrews and James Garner.  Please let me know if you’ve seen this – or are now going to put it on your holiday list 🙂

Enjoy and God Bless!

Plans For A Merry Music Film Festival

A mother plays the guitar while her two daught...

This year between the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas – I want to select a song or a movie each day to post on my blog to bring the season in style.

Many people have various ideas about what is the best music and the best movie memories at this wonderful time of the year – and I’m no exception.  I definitely have my favorites.  Most of them are for personal reasons – either I grew up watching or listening to them – or they touched me in a place that’s very special.

So starting tomorrow – I’m going to feature a song or a movie (or both) each day to help you celebrate as well.  Fell free to add your favorites in the comment section – it’s fun to share ideas with you – and have you list your favorites too 🙂

Besides the food of this holiday season – the music and movies provide a vehicle for me to continue celebrating all month-long.  Most of these holiday films have wonderful soundtracks too – which is one reason they have become classics to me and why I love watching them over and over.  In fact – we have quite a collection of them in our 30 year marriage – and there are some things we simply have to watch during the holiday season – or it just isn’t the same to us.  Even better – having a roaring fire while watching and munching on holiday treats 🙂

So I hope you will join me in helping to create a list of incredible “must watch” movies and “must listen to” music – for those who need a little help to jump-start this season.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week – and God Bless!

The Heartache Can Wait

Brandi Carlile performing at City Stages in Bi...

Image via Wikipedia

I’m loving this song by Brandi Carlile called “The Heartache Can Wait”.  Her lyrics and voice are reminiscent of Joni Mitchell – and sound very much like Joni’s song called “River” or even “Cactus Tree”.  There’s a purity of sound and beauty of just her voice as she tells this story of heartache around the holiday season.  These lyrics are universal because just about everyone can relate to a love that’s gone wrong at a certain time of the year – and somehow, every season is filled with a distant memory of remorse and regret.  It’s lyrics like these that capture the emotions deep inside and finally find its voice.

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.  The pictures with this song are just beautiful!

God Bless

You’re talking about leaving
It’s right about Christmas time
Thinking about moving on
I think I might die inside

I’m thinking about years gone by
I’m thinking about church at midnight
I’m thinking about letting go
I think that might finally be alright

But this is where we shine

Silver bells and open fire
And songs we used to sing
One more chance to be inspired
Is what I’m offering if love is not enough
Then stay with me because
The heartache can wait

It’s not about hanging on
It’s making my deal with God
If I could call one last truce
We’ve given it all we’ve got

Then I’m gonna catch my breath
And make it a long December
If we’ve got nothing left
This could be worth remembering
With a smile upon my face

Silver bells and open fire
And songs we used to sing
One more chance to be inspired
Is what I’m offering if love is not enough
Then stay with me because

Silver bells and open fire
And songs we used to sing
One more chance to be inspired
Is what I’m offering if love is not enough
Then stay with me because
The heartache can wait

Countdown to Christmas

10 days until Thanksgiving

41 days until Christmas

48 days until 2012

What do these days really mean for you?  Does it scare you to hear the actual time left to shop and prepare?  Do you have a tradition every holiday?  Are they just another day to you – or do you celebrate in style?  Do you have a favorite tradition or memory?

Thanksgiving is my favorite time – usually spent with family and friends over the years in our home – and also wonderful because of the food and the leftovers!  However this year we are going to our daughter’s home to help them celebrate their first Thanksgiving in their new home.

Christmas Eve we always spend with our kids going to a movie and then eating and opening gifts in the evening with them.  This year Christmas Day will have to be spent in our home due to our new puppy.

We usually don’t celebrate the new year with any special dinner or event – but I know many who do.  In years gone by – New Year’s Eve was a very special all-night event usually spent with our church youth group.  Now we’re just happy to go to bed – we are old and boring now 🙂

I’d love to hear your story and what you will be up to this year – in the holiday season.

God Bless
