Are You Forgettable?

Singer Katherine McPhee and pianist Lang Lang ...

I have a confession to make. A guilty pleasure if you will.

I watch American Idol. Every season since season 3.  I didn’t really get into before that – but I do remember every season since Fantasia.

Over the years I have seen some extraordinary talent emerge from that program – among those really great – Kris Allen,  Chris Daughtry, David Cook and Carrie Underwood – the likes of which we would never have heard about otherwise.  All of them have made songs famous – and we can name at least one that is our favorite from each artist.

A few years back Katherine McPhee was a runner-up on the show – and other than “Over the Rainbow” – I was not completely taken with her voice.  I thought she tried too hard to make her voice do all the runs and vocal acrobatics that some should not do.  I thought she was forgettable, until…

A couple of years later I heard this song on the radio.  “Ordinary World”.  It was amazing – both music and lyrics.  I found it and put it on a playlist for my car and computer – and have never grown tired of hearing it when it comes up in the rotation.  I think you will like it too.

Forgettable?  I think not.

Who is someone who has surprised you – when you thought they were forgettable?

Enjoy and God Bless

Music Of The Night – David Cook Version

David Cook (album)

In my humble opinion – this is the best version of this song to date.  David is much more than just the “American Idol” a couple of  years ago – he is a very talented ballad singer.  This song takes amazing control – the high note he reaches when singing ‘in the night’ is truly his own signature on song – never copied by another artist before or since and it is –  magical. If you love the music from “Phantom of the Opera” – then you will love this version of “Music of the night“.

Music Of The Night

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this song sung with more passion and beauty then David Cook – two seasons ago on American Idol.  Enjoy!

Night-time sharpens,
heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses …

Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it – tremulous and tender
Turn your face away
from the garish light of day,
turn your thoughts away
from cold, unfeeling light –
and listen to the music of the night …

Close your eyes and surrender to your
darkest dreams!
Purge your thoughts of the life
you knew before!
Close your eyes,
let your spirit start to soar!
And you’ll live
as you’ve never lived before …

Softly, deftly,
music shall surround you …
Feel it, hear it,
closing in around you …
Open up your mind,
let your fantasies unwind,
in this darkness which
you know you cannot fight –
the darkness of the music of the night …

Let your mind start a journey
through a strange new world!
Leave all thoughts
of the world you knew before!
Let your soul take you where you
long to be !
Only then can you belong to me …

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication!
Touch me, trust me savor each sensation!
Let the dream begin,
let your darker side give in
to the power of the music that I write –
the power of the music of the night …

You alone can make my song take flight –
help me make the music of the night . . .
