Musings From A Musical Mind

Audrey’s Gift

Last night we bundled up the pups – grabbed a blanket and jumped in the truck to go and look at Christmas lights.  It was cozy and warm in the cab and we found some fun Christmas music to listen to on the local radio station.

Sometimes there are no words to describe how perfect an evening can be.  And so I have posted this next song so you can hear and experience a little of what we did last night.

Merry Christmas – God Bless

Hundred More Years

Yesterday I saw a video of old photographs put together with music.  It was a video celebration made by my husband’s 2nd cousin for his Grandmother’s 100th birthday.  The last song on the video was “Hundred More Years” by Francesca Battistelli.  It stopped me in my tracks.  Such beautiful lyrics – so poignant and fitting for a celebration of a life well lived.

When I watch and listen to things like this, I am reminded how short life is – how quickly time goes by. Beauty fades – the spirit never dies. The body ages and decays – the person on the inside stays the same. Life and death. Letting go, holding on. Changing and yet staying the same. The circle of life.  We all enter life in the same way and we all die when our time is over.  We leave our mark on this world, either good or bad with our family and friends. And when we are no more – others carry on our memory.  Pictures tell only a small part of the story.  Most things happen outside the lens of a camera.   Things done in unspoken ways.  Pain, Joy, Happiness, Failure, Struggle, Change, Resignation, Aging – these are all a very real part of life.  Some live LARGE lives.  Everyone knows their name.  Some live  very quiet lives of significance – quietly doing things for others and live a life worthy of celebration.  I believe this was the case for Great Aunt Helen.

Let’s make it a good hundred years – a great memory and legacy to leave behind for others.  Serving God and others – using up all of our gifts – taking nothing with us. Let’s leave our mark – more than just photographs – may our very lives be an example of a life well lived.

Enjoy this song as you reflect on your hundred years.

God Bless

We Fall Down

I look outside my office window, on this day after New Year’s – and see a frozen pond.  The sky is clear but the air is very cold.  It seems a long time since warm and also a long time since snow.  It is the ‘in-between’ time of year.

Everyone is alive with resolutions, pictures and motivation, but I am at a steady pace.  Filling in my days with students and busy work.  There are many memories of other years that still remind me – cold weather, frozen ponds and ground white with snow.

There are seasons that circle round – warm and cold, wet and dry. Things to distract, fill us with joy and peace – or just annoy.  This too is a part of life.

Back to a routine is good for the soul.  So I am back to doing those things that I do automatically – but there are those things that also cause me to stop and ponder.

I was doing one of these ‘ordinary’ things yesterday going about my routine.  I listened to a song I had not heard for a long time, although I was familiar with the tune and lyrics.  It is a song about redemption.  About falling.  About recovering after the fall.  It is called “We Fall Down” by Bob Carlisle.  By the time the children’s choir joins in at the end of the song with Bob’s husky voice singing ad lib over top of the melody it is just pure beauty and the emotion of the song is fully realized.  I wanted to share it with you – because if you are like me – you have fallen.  And we are all just sinners after all.  And those of us who have been victorious to any degree in this life’s journey – are ones who are able to get back up after falling.  We have realized that we can’t do it on our own.  At all.

So my prayer for you today is this:  If you have missed the mark, been disappointed with yourself or others this past year, or think you just don’t measure up to those who seem to have it all together – all you have to do is get back up and start fresh.  He is waiting for you.  God’s mercy is new every morning – there is enough grace for each new day – and in this case – each New Year.  I pray that you will discover His love for you this day.

God Bless

Straight No Chaser – Indiana Christmas

Last year I posted “The Twelve Days of Christmas” by this great a cappella group. This year I was looking for additional music for my 4th Christmas CD.  The hand picked music that I make for my car. I stumbled upon this group again. I listened to all their wonderful music  – and chose three to use. This one is my favorite. If you have never heard anything from this group, look them up – you won’t be disappointed. They are a class act.
I also suggest “Carol of the Bells” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”.

God Bless you on this rare day of 12-12-12.  I hope all your Christmas wishes come true this season.

Ten Years

I’ve been reflecting this past month on the events of 10 years ago. It is the anniversary of purchasing our home in the Seattle area.

Time has a way of sneaking up on you, and for me – this journey happened slowly at times and at other times very quickly.

Ten years ago our daughter was 14 and a freshman in high school. Our son was 10 and in the 4th grade. That seems like a lifetime ago when they were that age – and at the time, it seemed as if time moved very slowly.

But in between the swim meets, choir concerts, endless baseball and basketball tournaments we knew these were the best years and we tried to enjoy them and hang on to every minute, knowing that once these days are gone – they are gone.

When 10 years comes and goes it is a funny thing – we say to ourselves and others around us, “What happened??” And we are truly surprised when things don’t stay the same or when we do something and our bodies don’t feel the same as they used to in the “good old days”. I truly do wonder where we got as much energy as we had to be running all the times with kids and their events and I know I couldn’t do it today without paying for it!

As I reflect on yet another Mother’s Day – I realize this is the first one where we are true empty-nester’s – our daughter has been married for the past 2 1/2 years and our son is going to school in Southern California – so it is my first Mother’s Day without him in the area.

But I also think to myself, “Wow – what great well-balanced grown up kids we have! We must have done something right – or maybe they turned out in spite of us – either way I’m thankful and grateful for all of God’s MANY blessings poured out to us in this last decade and the ones before that.

I am looking forward to a great future in this next decade and the ones to follow as God wills it for each of our lives and can’t wait to reflect back on those memories. But mostly I’m learning to live in the moment and enjoy the journey along the way.

Where we’re you 10 years ago?

God Bless

Day 35 – CHRISTMAS DAY!!! Crying For A Christmas

When I first heard this song, I knew it was special. I contacted Scott Krippayne to ask if he was going to release the sheet music for this – a year ago last fall, and he wrote back and said he didn’t know when it would be released.  I had it in mind for a voice student to sing – but we chose another song instead. Right after the recital, Scott contacted me again and said that it was now available. I scooped it up and then patiently waited for our next Christmas recital and for this voice student to sing it. She did – and it was amazing – just like I thought it would be.

This is such a powerful song – I hope you will have a moment to listen to the lyrics – and if you go to my music studio page on facebook (link is available on the right side of this page), you will see the student, Rachael Boulds singing this for our last recital.

I hope you and yours will have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

God Bless!

These are the lives of the rearranged
Scattered souls who’ve been displaced
Nowhere else to turn
Like Bethlehem we have packed the place
Human need fills ever space
No room at the inn

Still God found a corner,
Made a bed down in the hay
Could he reappear, make his advent here
Will he still draw near today?

My world is crying,
Crying for a Christmas
Some way to know for sure —
That our God is with us
We could all use a sign
A little glimpse of divine
For a world that still cries for Christmas

Feeding trough on a dirty floor
Unimpressive welcome for
God’s Almighty Son
Are we as blind to incarnation
Daily proof of our salvation
Love’s already come

We are not abandoned,
All alone in our despair
He who once came down, he can still be found
Every when and everywhere

My world is crying,
Crying for a Christmas
Some way to know for sure —
That our God is with us
Once a baby so small
Grew to die for us all
For a world that still cries for Christmas.

Jesus you are here, Jesus you are now
Jesus you are here, Jesus you are now

My world is crying,
Crying for a Christmas
Some way to know for sure —
That our God is with us
We can all be the sign
That his love is alive
For a world that still cries for Christmas

Day 28 – All Is Well by Michael W. Smith

The first time I heard this was about 20 Christmases ago – when Michael W. Smith came out with his first Christmas album. This is so AWESOME – starts off with a simple child solo and then the whole boy’s choir joins in. Very moving lyrics and melody. I once had a voice student sing this at a Christmas recital – it was just beautiful.

Enjoy and God Bless!
