When Things Work

Most things in our lives work.  It is when they don’t, that we notice.

I now am the proud owner of three devices – an iMac, iPhone and now an iPad 2 (thanks to a very generous gift from my son for Mother’s Day).  It can be triple trouble when things go wrong – not to mention having triple the junk mail to delete every day 🙂

Because I also run a business and manage personal appointments, my calendar is very important to me.  The nice man at the Apple store told me I needed iCloud to sync my devices together wirelessly – and he turned the feature on – on both my iPhone and iPad.  Unfortunately, he did not realize that at home I have an older Mac, which does not support iCloud – and by turning on this feature, I received duplicates on everything on my calendars.  So while coming home, I deleted all the duplicate entries on my iPhone.  But when I arrived home to check this with iCal on my iMac I found to my despair – EVERYTHING had been erased!  Just vanished into thin air!  I remember having this problem when I first got my iPhone and the only fix was to turn off iCloud – I just couldn’t remember why!  Now I know.

While trying to rebuild the information from both my iPhone and iPad 2 – I found that many things were gone and there were significant holes in my schedule.  This was a disaster because I have 25 music lessons every week and some of those appointments had to reschedule or change and I now had to rely on my faulty memory – not good.  It was a panicky situation for me.

I read every forum I could get my hands on talking about syncing my calendars so I would never have this problem again – but came up empty every time.  There was a way around iCloud on iCal – but I could not understand it – even though it was supposed to be easy.  I called my techie son who works for Apple and it was discovered that I don’t have enough memory and would need to buy more memory and then do an upgrade to Lion before I could get iCloud on my Mac.  It was discouraging and expensive.  All I wanted was to sync my calendars and for it to work.

So I slept on it – and the next morning I tried again.  I came across another forum talking about the same problem as mine.  This time the “fix” was so easy I felt almost ridiculous trying it.  In the process I was on hold for an Apple techie to see if I had done everything I could.  By the time a young man came on the line I was well into solving the problem by syncing the three calendars on iTunes with a special iCloud code that was given in the forum I was reading.  The Apple tech – (bless his heart) said that it basically couldn’t be done and that I needed the upgrade.  Period.

So when this simple “fix” WORKED – I was AMAZED and ELATED!!

We often take things for granted when they work.

Do you have a problem you’re trying to solve?  Don’t give up.  There is always an answer.  It may not be the answer you’re wanting or thinking needs to happen – but there is always an answer.

Look for another way – think outside the box and find out what works.

God Bless

Fix You (Javier Colon from “The Voice”)

I’m LOVING this guy on “The Voice” and hoping he wins the money and recording contract through that show.  I bought both his singles on iTunes – this one and “Angel” and listen to them in my car – what a talented guy!  Here is my favorite – from the band “Coldplay” – here is “Fix you”

Who is your favorite on “The Voice”?

Enjoy and God Bless!

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down on your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down on your face
And I…

Tears stream down on your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down on your face
And I…

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

An iMac G5 17" (Rev. A or B) with an Appl...

Yesterday my husband bought me my very first iMac as an early Christmas present.  Everyone said I needed it – especially because I am a music teacher and have a lot of video and music on my computer – and because my PC is very tired and old.  And since music is so much a part of my life it is the natural choice – especially because  a Mac is said to be far superior to a PC for editing music and video.

So our friend John found us a great deal on a used iMac – about 2 years young and hardly used except for playing music in a home office.  It’s in incredible shape and for all practical purposes it is JUST LIKE BRAND NEW to me.

But I am not a patient person by nature.  Oh I can eventually figure things out – and I have figured many things out with software programs and issues in regards to my PC – that go YEARS back.  But initially I am a total wreck.  And although the previous owner wiped the computer clean of his ownership – it still has some stubborn default items that will not allow me to install new software without a stupid administrative password – which he doesn’t even KNOW anymore.  And I know that because he tried right in front of us and it would take NOTHING.  So he rebooted and it disappeared – so we thought we were in the clear – Until…yeah – well you get the picture.  It’s been a frustrating couple of days.  I do not have Apple support for this computer and I can’t talk to anyone for free – and I REFUSE to pay $49 to talk about a ‘one-time’ issue  – so…I’m trying my best to figure it out.

About a half hour ago – I finally just had to WALK AWAY.  Greg is not here – but even if he was – he’s no help in this department (bless his sweet little heart) – so I’m on my own.  (Oh he knows some things – but unlike me – he has NO INTEREST in computers AT ALL.  Except for returning emails and seeing what everyone is up to on facebook – and looking at the weather and news online – he’s really not that active online.  And that leaves him to prepare for weddings and funerals – using his laptop as a word-processor and type away – he does!)

At the suggestion of our friend, John – I also purchased an external drive and it should be here today – to store all 14 years of recitals – and even tons of pictures too.  I’ve never had anything like this either – so it is another thing I must learn.

And I don’t have ANY idea how to transfer my music from iTunes onto my Mac either.  I tried doing the old ‘reversal’ from my iPhone to my new Mac – but don’t know how to do that without TOTALLY erasing everything.  Oh I’ve googled it – and even gone to iTunes and iMac support – but I just got a headache and nothing more.  Things like this put me in a VERY BAD MOOD – and my husband does not like me very much when I can’t SOLVE SOMETHING.

Ahhh – such is life.  Computers and technology.  They are like people.  And Life.  And I don’t like it.

But I SHALL SURVIVE and even be a better, more knowledgeable and wiser person for it!

This morning I was greeted  with a sweet and loving message in my inbox from someone who has never met me in person – but who has gained encouragement and strength from this blog.  It was lovely to hear those words of  support – and just when I needed them too.  She said I look at problems as opportunities – and it was so nice to hear her say that.  Especially today.

May every problem you encounter – either with people in your world – or computers and technology – bring you one step closer patience, grace and resignation. And may you FIGURE everything out!!  I’m still looking for a bit of patience.  Maybe that can be another early Christmas present 🙂

God Bless
