Musings From A Musical Mind

One Mississippi

The other night on American Idol – Dexter came on and sang this BEAUTIFUL ballad by Brett Eldredge.  I love it when a contestant sings something unexpected.  A slow ballad after singing fast country tunes most of the season.  I loved it when Harry noted that all of the great “front men” from famous bands – can sing the slow stuff too and sing it very well.  The mark of a great singer – one who can sing any style and any speed and pull it off every time.   Something that seems easy, but is very difficult.  Dexter – you’ve got my vote.

Belong

This song by Chris Rice came on my Pandora Radio station today while I was getting ready for the day.  I’ve heard it before but this time it really grabbed me.  So much so I just knew I had to find it and post it.

I hope it speaks to you today.

God Bless

Words and Music by Chris Rice

Fading memories ignored
I crawl across the forest floor
Pool reflects an orphan child
Dirty, lost, alone and wild
Fatherless and nameless still
Fallen heart and broken, will
there ever be a place where I belong

I cower ‘neath the monster trees
And try to stand on tired feet
But gravity knocks me to the ground
Where I give up, and tears roll down
I claw the dust and beg the end
Curse the day that I began
to hope there’d be a place where I belong

I hear a sound I recognize
You lift my chin and seek my eyes
Song of love You sing to me
I ache to sing it back to Thee
“Father Love prepares a place
Brother Jesus leads the way
Follow to the place where you belong!”

How did I miss this wondrous song?
The forest sang it all along
“River rinses all your shame
Father offers you His name
Father Love prepares a home
Brother Jesus leads you on
Follow to the place where you belong!”

“Father Love prepares a place
Brother Jesus leads the way
Follow to the place where you belong
Follow to the place where you belong!”

MacArthur Park

This last week on American Idol, Amber sang “MacArthur Park” – a “one hit wonder” from the sixties. I remember the remake in the 70’s from Disco Queen, Donna Summer and always liked the song. I was in junior high when I first heard it and wasn’t sure what the lyrics were or what they meant but always felt connected with it somehow, but I never knew what it was called. When they said the name I went to look it up and found many covers for this song. My favorite is from none other than the great Glen Campbell.

This song has a great melody – but what do those lyrics really mean??  Here is one explanation I found explaining these lyrics – maybe you can come up with your own after hearing this version:

MacArthur Park is a sad, touching song about a once wonderful relationship –  one that comes along rarely. MacArthur park is the relationship. The cake is everything that was put into the relationship to make it what it is ( it takes a lot of ingredients to make a cake or a relationship). The cake being left out in the rain and melting is saying that the relationship is not being nurtured and is melting and falling apart. The part where he says “i don’t think that i can take it because it took so long to bake it and I’ll never have the recipe again” means he is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that it took a lot of time and effort to get this beautiful relationship and now its falling apart because it’s not being looked after and all the special qualities poured into the relationship will never be able to be duplicated.

Here is a live version set back in the 70’s.  It is great – and he even plays some mean guitar towards the end.  A real treat to hear him backed by a HUGE orchestra!  What about you?  Do you remember this song?  Where does it take you back to?

Spring was never waiting for us, girl

It ran one step ahead As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages

And were pressed in love’s hot, fevered iron Like a striped pair of pants
MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark

All the sweet, green icing flowing down

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it

‘Cause it took so long to bake it

And I’ll never have that recipe again, oh no
I recall the yellow cotton dress

Foaming like a wave On the ground around your knees

The birds like tender babies in your hands

And the old men playing checkers, by the trees
MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark

All the sweet, green icing flowing down

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it

‘Cause it took so long to bake it

And I’ll never have that recipe again, oh no
There will be another song for me

For I will sing it

There will be another dream for me

Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm

And never let you catch me looking at the sun

And after all the loves of my life

After all the loves of my life, you’ll still be the one
I will take my life into my hands

and I will use it

I will win the worship in their eyes

and I will lose it

I will have the things that I desire

And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life

Oh, after all the loves of my life

I’ll be thinking of you and wondering why
MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark

All the sweet, green icing flowing down

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it

‘Cause it took so long to bake it

And I’ll never have that recipe again Oh no, oh no, no, no, oh no

I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)

Yesterday I watched a live performance (I had recorded) of Josh Groban singing at the Lincoln Center in New York.  I love Josh and his music!  Who doesn’t?  And he honestly seems like someone all of us would be comfortable having as a friend.  When he speaks he seems unaffected by his fame and significance.  It is as though he is just the boy next door and he happens to have an incredible voice.

I wish talent like that came to everyone just because they wish it – however, it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to have a career like the one Josh has had.  And he would say, many things have had to take a back seat.  I also know that he has had to have incredible drive and determination besides great vocal talent.

As I listened to many of his old and new songs and his easy interaction with the audience – it wasn’t until this last song that I felt compelled to look it up to see if I could purchase the sheet music!  It was written and originally sung by the great Stevie Wonder.  I was literally transfixed as I listened.  I looked it up and found many covers, done by Michael McDonald, George Michael and Art Garfunkel.  And even though all these are wonderful – Josh brings something really special to these lyrics and melody.  I hope you will agree.

This is for all of you who have ever been in love.

Enjoy and God Bless

“I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)”

Shattered dreams, worthless years,
Here am I encased inside a hollow shell,
Life began, then was done,
Now I stare into a cold and empty well
The many sounds that meet our ears
the sights our eyes behold,
Will open up our merging hearts,
And feed our empty soulsI believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever

Without despair we will share,
And the joys of caring will not be replaced,
What has been must never end
And with the strength we have won’t be erased
When the truths of love are planted firm,
They won’t be hard to find,
And the words of love I speak to you
will echo in your mind

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever

I’m so glad that I found someone to believe in again,
I’m so glad that I found someone to believe in again

God surely answered my prayer,
God surely answered by prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
God always will answer your prayers,
Believe in one who will answer my prayer,
Thank you God

Come on, let’s fall in love,
You’re the woman I’ve been waiting for,
Come on, let’s fall in love,
You’re the girl that I really adore,
Come on, let’s fall in love…[etc]

The Summer Knows

Summer of '42

Image via Wikipedia

The movie “The Summer Of  42” came out in the early 70’s, starring Jennifer O’Neil.  I saw it one time, many years ago – and don’t remember too much about it – but I do remember loving the musical score to the movie.  I don’t remember paying attention to the lyrics – just parts of them here and there.  And like many of us, when we can’t hear what the lyrics are – we make them up or find a different meaning in them.

In high school – an upper classmate of mine sang this song at an assembly for our school.  I can’t remember what the occasion was for her to be singing this song – I just remember that she did.  Because I didn’t know the lyrics – I thought she was singing about something really inappropriate, like people taking off their clothes!  So funny to think about it now – the song is actually talking about the seasons of summer and fall.  That will teach me to listen closely to what is really being said!

I love this version by Barbra Streisand – hope you will too 🙂

Do you have a favorite movie from that time period?  How about an old song you were surprised to find the actual lyrics – instead of what you thought it was saying?  I would love to hear them – I’m sure many of yours are the same as mine.

God Bless

The summer smiles, the summer knows
And unashamed, she sheds her clothes
The summer smoothes the restless sky
And lovingly she warms the sand on which you lie

The summer knows, the summer’s wise
She sees the doubts within your eyes
And so she takes her summer time
Tells the moon to wait and the sun to linger
Twists the world ’round her summer finger
Lets you see the wonder of her arms

And if you’ve learned your lessons well
There’s little more for her to tell
One last caress, it’s time to dress for fall

And if you’ve learned your lesson well
There’s little more for her to tell
One last caress, it’s time to dress for fall

I Will Remember You

One of the best love songs from Amy Grant.  Set to this video with a military theme – priceless.

Enjoy and God Bless
