Mercy

My heart is stirred today in much emotion – a heavy heart over events and situations that have lately affected my life and made it difficult to press on.  A difficult season of life – with many things out of my control – leaving deep sadness,  remorse – and resignation.

Our pastor, Stephen Collins, spoke on the subject of ‘Mercy’ today.  And although it is a subject that is not new to me – or any people of faith  – I believe  I heard newness in this simple message today – things that I will continue to ponder in the coming weeks.  I found myself very emotional.  This is a subject that is close to my heart and life.  And so with tears streaming down my face – I sat there and took it all in – and allowed the Lord to minister sweet words of comfort and blessing.  I was touched and moved beyond words.

I’ve noticed something about people who are merciful. – they are the first ones to forgive, love, embrace and welcome back,  those who are lost or fallen away.  They have no trouble accepting forgiveness or giving it.  They do not accuse and blame.  They have tender hearts – and they understand the value of mercy – because God has shown mercy to them.  They are also the happiest and most positive people in the world – with many friends.  Their friends trust them – and turn to them when they are in trouble – with no fear of judgment of alienation.  These are people who have been forgiven.

We’ve been watching ‘A Christmas Carol’  – I was noting how Scrooge shows no mercy at the beginning of the story – and then after being shown his life by the ‘spirits’ – he begins to see others and himself in a new light.  The Scrooge story is a story of mercy.  A story of second chances and a new lease on life – a valuable reminder to all of us to remember that when you show mercy to others – others will be merciful.  And it is interesting to note – that the nephew and employee of Scrooge have merciful hearts and embrace him without question – at the beginning of the story – when he is NOT merciful – and later as he is transformed at the end of the story.  No questions – no judgment – no criteria.  Just open arms of love and mercy.

I want to be one that shows mercy – even when I feel as though others have judged me and not understood me – or shown mercy to me.  I want to be the first to say, ‘I understand, I forgive, I love’.  And leave it at that.  No questions asked.  No hesitation.  No disbelief.  Just love and mercy.

Help me Lord to be that kind of person.  Help me to get over myself, my pride, my hurt and pain.  Help me to let go of others that have wronged me – those who have no understanding that their words and actions have wounded me more than they will ever know – and help me to forgive them and show mercy. For I am very aware that if I do not show mercy to others who have failed – or not done what I think they should, then you will not show mercy to me.  Help me to walk with a pure clean heart – free of agenda – free of revenge.  Help me to see others through your eyes.  Amen.

God Bless

As You Are

This is my favorite Mark Schultz song.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do – and receive great hope and comfort from the lyrics – as the Lord urges you to just come ‘as you are’ – no questions asked.

God Bless

Come as you
open hands
broken heart
as you are

Come with your joy
and your pain
with your doubt and your shame
as you are

Prodigal daughters and sons
everyone
all will be forgiven
no matter what you’ve done
and when the Father sees you
He will run
No matter how far
come as you are

Come, please don’t wait
there’s still time
it’s not too late
to come as you are

Prodigal daughters and sons
everyone
all will be forgiven
no matter what you’ve done
and when the Father see you
He will run
no matter how far
come as you are

Prodigal daughters and sons
everyone
all will be forgiven
no matter what you’ve done
and when the Father sees you
He will run
no matter how far
come as you are

And when the Father sees you
He will run
no matter how far
come as you are

Mercy’s Arms

We were visiting Evergreen Foursquare Church yesterday in Auburn, Washington – where our friend Doug Bursch is the pastor.   The message was probably the best one I have ever heard – on the subject of humility.  It is amazing how we can grow up in the church and even see the same passages of scripture and yet – when somebody else reveals another truth from those passages – it can seem like it’s brand new.  This happened yesterday.

I am constantly amazed at how God will speak – using people and things in our lives to drive home a point and whisper truth into our hearts.  We spend so much time and energy on ‘puffing ourselves up’ to look good – or to feel better – even if we don’t openly admit it – and we can sure find fault with everyone else – again to make us feel good.  We may say to ourselves, “well – I don’t do what THEY do – so I’m better than they are”  – or, “good grief – I’m glad I’m not like them – they’re so WEAK.  I would never do that”  Be very careful – for what you see in your neighbor you are VERY capable of having the same thing happen – unless you take care of your own heart.

What Doug pointed out yesterday was this:  All sin is against God alone.  We don’t sin against our brother or they against us – it’s ALWAYS a problem between God and us – and if I don’t get down to the root of the problem with God alone – I will always point fingers and blame – but it won’t do me any good – in the end I need to come to the complete resolution that I have sinned against God and He will hold me accountable.  I cannot control what others do – I can only control me.  I think sometimes I feel justified in feeling as I do – when others harm me – or hurt me.  And it is completely wrong.

Jesus took a position of servant. He didn’t have to.  But He humbled himself and tried to teach it to the men around him – even though they were pretty ‘brain dead’ and just ‘didn’t get it’ most of the time.  His was a model of humility for me – to take the lowest position – become lower and lower – prefer others over me – even if I feel just the opposite.  Even if others use me – discard me – blame me and mistreat me.  It doesn’t come naturally – because it is the sin nature inside of me that wants to blame – deflect and feel justified.  It is not easy to take on humility.  It is just the right thing to do.

And like the song lyrics below – the ‘walls’ of pride around my heart have to crumble – as I learn to surrender to all He has for me – and surrender to “Mercy’s Arms”.  And as I do – I find that my heart is forever changed – I begin to take on the character and humility of  Christ – as He cleans up my heart – becoming less and less like myself and more and more like Him – so others will catch a glimpse of Jesus in me.

God Bless

The mighty fortress walls
I have built around my foolish heart
how they crumble and they fall
as I surrender all
to Mercy’s Arms

Bathed in holy rain
cleansed from sinner’s bitter stain
only love remains
I’m forever changed
by Mercy’s Arms
sweet the surrender
sweet the embrace
sweet the forgiveness
to one forever undeserving of his grace
safety encircled
rested and warmed
sweet is the taste of love that awaits
un Mercy’s Arms

In the light the life the way
is the key unlocking every chain
sin is lost and freedom gained
the price was paid
by Mercy’s Arms

When I reach my journey’s end
how I hope that He will call me friend
and reach out for me again
forever spend
in Mercy’s Arms

What Does The Lord Require?

Micah 6:8

“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

What is good?  Do we sometimes forget what that is?  I know I do.  I know I love mercy – that is – I love it when others are merciful to me – and I try to show mercy to others.  But I’m sure I fail miserably at it.  The old, “do unto others” routine gets a bit old – especially if we do not feel any of that grace and mercy from others.  But I do try.  I am trying.

But when we’re talking about what is good – I think we have an idea in our mind – and sometimes this is not what God is meaning by this.  Good to me – means a life of blessing.  A life safe within proper boundaries. And there is a fine line between what feels good and what is good.  Sin feels good – that’s why people stray away from their life of safety.  If it didn’t – people wouldn’t do it.  But there is a “fall out” from sin – and the bible does warn us about this “fall out” many times – in other words – it’s just NOT worth it!

I don’t know about you – but to live with “blessing” from God is what I want for my life and for my family.  It requires discipline of the mind – thinking about walking humbly – to act justly and love mercy.

What does the Lord require?  That I be perfect?  That I automatically love good instead of bad?  No – I don’t think so.  I believe that He gently works in and through us – in a very loving way – to inspire us – to teach us to love good things in our life – to love and embrace people – be merciful to others – and to be humble.

Dear Lord – breathe in me your will for my life.  Daily renew my mind and spirit with your eyesight.  Probe the deepest parts of me.  Show me what is good.  Help me to wave goodbye to things that aren’t.  To love mercy and be merciful to others – in the same way that you showed mercy to me.  Help me to walk humbly among people and to represent YOU to everyone I meet.

God Bless
