Tiny Dancer

Those of you that grow up in the 60's and 70's will remember and appreciate the early days of Elton John's career with famous hits like “Your Song” and “Bennie and the Jets” – along with “Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me” and “Daniel”. The song “Tiny Dancer” is one of my all time favorites (along with the song “The One” and “Your Song”) and brings back many wonderful memories of my youth.

Bernie Taupin, friend and lyricist songwriting partner to Elton's amazing melodies and piano arrangements is said to have written these words for his wife, Maxine – who really was a ballerina and seamstress traveling with their band. Bernie would see her dancing on the side of the stage and he was inspired to pen these very famous lyrics. They were married in 1971 and Elton was best man. It is also in 1971 that Elton recorded the live performance below.

No matter what your personal opinion is of Elton John, who will have to admit that he was and still is a very talented and accomplished writer and musician – spanning a career of some 45 years. He is also responsible for writing the beautiful musical scores to many Disney animated movies such as “Lion King” which are poignant and timeless.

If you grew up when I did – you will love this “acoustic” performance of the very well known hit. What is your favorite Elton John song? What memories do you have when you hear it played now?

Enjoy this special recording of “Tiny Dancer” – it always makes me smile 🙂

God Bless

You’re All I Need To Get By

Cover of You`Re All I Need (Mlps) (Shm)

Last night I was watching the new musical show called “Duets” and heard this great duet as made famous by the late Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye.  I had to look it up and post it for you to enjoy today.  There are many music videos of this song on youtube – but I think this is the nicest one – what a GREAT song!!

It’s a funny thing – how listening to a certain melody or some past lyrics in a forgotten song,  can totally transport me to an earlier time and circumstance.

The year was 1968 – I was 7 years old.  I used to watch a television show that would feature different popular artists in the 60’s.  My favorite song was “Up, up and away” by the 5th dimension.  I thought it was important to have a favorite song, even when I was 7 – so that was it.  And only because I saw them perform that song on television.  I’m sure that I must have also heard “You’re all I need to get by” on that same program because I am almost sure that it is on that show where I first heard it.  But if I’m wrong about that detail it would have been when moving to Seattle from Canada in 1969 and I listened to top 40 hits on a little transistor radio.

Do you remember it?  Where were you when you first heard it?  Take a listen and see if it doesn’t take you back.

How You Live (Turn Up The Music)

The Best So Far (Cindy Morgan album)

Image via Wikipedia

This wonderful song written by the great Cindy Morgan is fast becoming one of my favorites.  Recorded a couple of years ago by the group “Point of Grace” it needs to be noted that Cindy’s original lyrics were slightly “edgier” for the simple reason, she said – “Because I’m married”.  But because “Point of Grace” wanted to record it – they asked Cindy to rewrite the first two lines so it could be universal and not just for the married lady.

I love how Cindy writes.  She really seems to get it – the good, the bad and the ugly all mixed up together in wonderful and poignant lyrics that transcend gender, era and circumstance.  I have posted her music videos before to showcase not only her songwriting ability – but also her great and versatile singing voice.  She is also an accomplished pianist and often during videos she is playing keyboards.

This song is about making every moment count.  And as Father’s Day approaches – and we remember our Dads and our husbands  – I want to challenge you to make every moment count with the “Dads” in your life – Hey – TURN UP THE MUSIC!!!

God Bless!

Wake up to the sunlight
With your windows open
Don’t hold in your anger or leave things unspoken
Wear your red dress
Use your good dishes
Make a big mess and make lots of wishes
Have what you want
But want what you have
And don’t spend your life lookin’ back[Chorus]
Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
You won’t regret it
Lookin’ back from where you have been
Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did
It’s how you liveSo go to the ballgames
And go to the ballet
And go see your folks more than just on the holidays
Kiss all your children
Dance with your wife
Tell your husband you love him every night
Don’t run from the truth
Cause you can’t get away
Just face it and you’ll be okay[Chorus]

Oh wherever you are and wherever you’ve been
Now is the time to begin

So give to the needy
And pray for the grieving
E’en when you don’t think that you can
Cause all that you do is bound to come back to you
So think of your fellow-man
Make peace with God and make peace with yourself
Cause in the end there’s nobody else

[Chorus]

Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did
It’s how you live

Collide

There’s something about music that bring out our emotions and take us to mysterious places that mere words can’t.  I was watching a music video yesterday on my friend’s blog – she had posted a video of a man auditioning for a panel of judges on “Britain’s Got Talent” and he sang Opera for them.  The reaction from the audience was a tangible explosion of surprise and tears.  It was very moving to watch and witness those same emotions with them.  Music has such amazing power over us.

Yesterday, while preparing for my recital which is this Friday night – I had a student come in a rehearse her song that she is singing while her older brother plays piano for her.  It is a beautiful song – sung in Spanish.  I can’t understand a word of it – and yet there is something so incredibly beautiful about it – I know my students and parents will be filled with emotion as we close the program.

The following song and video is just darling.  I wrote a note to the one who made this and posted this on youtube for all of us to enjoy – so great when others will share their gift with us, isn’t it?  Taking the beauty of the song and the wonder of animation and combining them into a beautiful love song.

Enjoy and God Bless

The dawn is breaking
A light shining through
You’re barely waking
And I’m tangled up in you
Yeah

I’m open, you’re closed
Where I follow, you’ll go
I worry I won’t see your face
Light up again

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills my mind
I somehow find
You and I collide

I’m quiet you know
You make a first impression
I’ve found I’m scared to know I’m always on your mind

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the stars refuse to shine
Out of the back you fall in time
I somehow find
You and I collide

Don’t stop here
I lost my place
I’m close behind

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills your mind
You finally find
You and I collide

You finally find
You and I collide
You finally find
You and I collide
