Happy New Year – Back To A Routine

Vacations and a change of pace can be good.  But I have found that usually after too much change of pace and out of regular schedule, I am more than ready to get back to the way things should be.  An actual regular routine, including and not limited to:

1) Exercise.  I am not a fanatic – but I do see the value in being mobile and keeping active – especially as I am getting older.   I’ve had a few too many injuries because of a stiff back or neck, and know that I could have reduced the recovery time, and maybe even the root of the injury (or at lease lessened recovery time) had I been more active and limber.

Today I do some dance/aerobic exercises almost every morning for about twenty minutes.  Jane Fonda has some great workouts on for those of us who are aging but still want to stay fit.  Among my favorites are: Jane Fonda: Fat-Burning Latin Dance Workout and this one: Jane Fonda: Fat-Burning Funk Dance Workout. She also has weight training videos and I would encourage you to try them – they are really fun! On alternate days I do a weight training workout for about 20 minutes to strengthen my upper body and core.

2) Eat Good Food.  Just less of it.  Count calories and you’ll be surprised how they add up.  Have an app like “Lose-It” for your mobile device and log in everything you eat daily.  This works.  “They” actually are right when they say, “move more, eat less”.  Both Greg and I have lost over 25 pounds since August and are still working on it (especially after the holiday foods).

3) Live A Thankful Life.  A grateful, thankful life reduces stress.  It is the only way to live.  Be generous in both words and deeds.  Help those around you – lift another up in spirit.  Count your blessings, smile every day and LAUGH out loud!

And if you are an animal person – get a dog or cat for companionship and to love on.  They will keep you young, and remove the focus from yourself.  They will get you outside and make you smile and laugh every day.  Their love is unconditional and does not disappear.  They are always ready to love on you 🙂

I am glad to be back to a solid routine of daily work to keep me busy, exercise and food to keep me strong and healthy and my doggies to bring joy to every day stress.  And I wish the same for all of you.

Happy New Year – may this new year be a blessed one!

We Fall Down

I look outside my office window, on this day after New Year’s – and see a frozen pond.  The sky is clear but the air is very cold.  It seems a long time since warm and also a long time since snow.  It is the ‘in-between’ time of year.

Everyone is alive with resolutions, pictures and motivation, but I am at a steady pace.  Filling in my days with students and busy work.  There are many memories of other years that still remind me – cold weather, frozen ponds and ground white with snow.

There are seasons that circle round – warm and cold, wet and dry. Things to distract, fill us with joy and peace – or just annoy.  This too is a part of life.

Back to a routine is good for the soul.  So I am back to doing those things that I do automatically – but there are those things that also cause me to stop and ponder.

I was doing one of these ‘ordinary’ things yesterday going about my routine.  I listened to a song I had not heard for a long time, although I was familiar with the tune and lyrics.  It is a song about redemption.  About falling.  About recovering after the fall.  It is called “We Fall Down” by Bob Carlisle.  By the time the children’s choir joins in at the end of the song with Bob’s husky voice singing ad lib over top of the melody it is just pure beauty and the emotion of the song is fully realized.  I wanted to share it with you – because if you are like me – you have fallen.  And we are all just sinners after all.  And those of us who have been victorious to any degree in this life’s journey – are ones who are able to get back up after falling.  We have realized that we can’t do it on our own.  At all.

So my prayer for you today is this:  If you have missed the mark, been disappointed with yourself or others this past year, or think you just don’t measure up to those who seem to have it all together – all you have to do is get back up and start fresh.  He is waiting for you.  God’s mercy is new every morning – there is enough grace for each new day – and in this case – each New Year.  I pray that you will discover His love for you this day.

God Bless

This New Year

A powerful light shines in the dark.

Another new year

firmly closing last year

as I step into new possibilities

endless discipline

of mind and heart

practicing pure thoughts

never slipping back

to places where my sinful nature roams

It is a balancing of will and choice

knowing those decisions will affect me

and the bad ones

hold me back

and have me living

in fear and regret

The new year

rings out

and calls me forward

with new dreams and visions

challenging me with endless possibilities

and unfulfilled purpose

striving to find something

and somewhere

I have never been before

This new year comes

and beckons me

whispering hope and reprieve

from sadness of the past

It gestures to me

and makes a silent promise

“maybe this year”, I say

I will find that new purpose

and way to share my gifts

do the thing

created especially for me

This new year

sparks of promise

and hope

as I build on what I’ve learned thus far

let go of the past

with its many mistakes

and stumbles

and strain toward that goal

and that prize

set up especially for me

where I have failed before

just maybe

it will be

this new year

Plans For A Merry Music Film Festival

A mother plays the guitar while her two daught...

This year between the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas – I want to select a song or a movie each day to post on my blog to bring the season in style.

Many people have various ideas about what is the best music and the best movie memories at this wonderful time of the year – and I’m no exception.  I definitely have my favorites.  Most of them are for personal reasons – either I grew up watching or listening to them – or they touched me in a place that’s very special.

So starting tomorrow – I’m going to feature a song or a movie (or both) each day to help you celebrate as well.  Fell free to add your favorites in the comment section – it’s fun to share ideas with you – and have you list your favorites too 🙂

Besides the food of this holiday season – the music and movies provide a vehicle for me to continue celebrating all month-long.  Most of these holiday films have wonderful soundtracks too – which is one reason they have become classics to me and why I love watching them over and over.  In fact – we have quite a collection of them in our 30 year marriage – and there are some things we simply have to watch during the holiday season – or it just isn’t the same to us.  Even better – having a roaring fire while watching and munching on holiday treats 🙂

So I hope you will join me in helping to create a list of incredible “must watch” movies and “must listen to” music – for those who need a little help to jump-start this season.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week – and God Bless!

Countdown to Christmas

10 days until Thanksgiving

41 days until Christmas

48 days until 2012

What do these days really mean for you?  Does it scare you to hear the actual time left to shop and prepare?  Do you have a tradition every holiday?  Are they just another day to you – or do you celebrate in style?  Do you have a favorite tradition or memory?

Thanksgiving is my favorite time – usually spent with family and friends over the years in our home – and also wonderful because of the food and the leftovers!  However this year we are going to our daughter’s home to help them celebrate their first Thanksgiving in their new home.

Christmas Eve we always spend with our kids going to a movie and then eating and opening gifts in the evening with them.  This year Christmas Day will have to be spent in our home due to our new puppy.

We usually don’t celebrate the new year with any special dinner or event – but I know many who do.  In years gone by – New Year’s Eve was a very special all-night event usually spent with our church youth group.  Now we’re just happy to go to bed – we are old and boring now 🙂

I’d love to hear your story and what you will be up to this year – in the holiday season.

God Bless

My Husband

I just thought I would post a picture of my handsome husband, Greg.  He gets better looking with age – as most men do and he’s one of the most humble men I know.  He is even sporting a little facial hair these days to add to the mystic.

The other day he was showing off  (just a little)  and said that he has to look good for the women who look at him when he walks into Starbucks.  He said, ‘I can’t help it if I’m ‘eye-candy’ – it’s not my fault’.  And there you have it.  It is always said with a GREAT amount of humor and a twinkle in his eye!  To that I laugh and say, ‘all you women – EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT!!’

There’s nothing better than a man who loves God and loves his wife and family.  Even if he IS ‘eye-candy’ for the ladies.  It’s a burden.

Hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Day!!

God Bless

A Solid Resting Place

Sunset - 6 Feb 2008

I am always comforted by scripture – the many passages that speak to me and help me find that solid resting place for my weary mind – as I am surrounded by the cares and sorrows of this world.

As I look ahead at the new year – I am reminded once again of God’s faithfulness and love shown to me over the last year and all of my life.  I have gone through things and have watched those around me be touched by sorrow, joy, happiness, pain and regret.  But in the midst of all of it – good and bad, He was always there.  That still small voice that always covers me and won’t let me go.  And I am so thankful that I know Him – and that He is a merciful God.

My prayer is that you too will find Him a solid and reliable friend – in times of joy and in times of trouble.  That you will find a reason and purpose for your life – and that you will allow Him to show you and help you with all those unanswered questions.

Below are some scriptures of comfort and hope – as we look forward to the new year.

God Bless

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

“You crowned the year with Your bounty and goodness…”
Psalm 65:11 (Amplified Bible)

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
