Maybe I’m Amazed

I’m always amazed by the talent on reality shows like “The Voice”.  This season has exceptional voices.  Here is my favorite duet so far –

Maybe I’m Amazed

If you did not see this performance – you need to.  Caleb Johnson is a name we will be hearing a lot in the future.   He has proven that he can sing any style equally well – and I will be surprised if he does not win this competition.  I think he did Paul McCartney proud this week!

God Bless

Somewhere Only We Know

This week on “The Voice” Michelle Chamuel sang one of my favorites, “Somewhere Only We Know”. I love how passionate she is when she sings. I believe her. That is important when being a vocal artist – that you are believable.

So many times singers have a great vocal, but you don’t get an emotion reaction to them. When someone really embraces the lyrics of the song, finds a place deep down or an emotion to draw from – the result is pure magic!

Enjoy this video from Michelle and God Bless!

Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher

I’ve heard many versions of this next song while growing up. I know it’s a tune from the sixties, sung by Jackie Wilson and later recorded by Rita Coolidge in the 70’s. But I forgotten about this great version by Michael McDonald. This came on iHeart Radio this morning and immediately I felt a smile come across my face and I found myself dancing and singing along! The happiness is the beat and lyrics are contagious!  When you first hear Michael’s rich throaty vocals – he is easily recognizable as the “voice” of the Doobie Brothers in the 70’s.  Great voice – great memories – fun song!  What song gives you a feeling of dance and makes you want to sing along?

Here’s to putting a dance in your step and a smile on your face today  🙂

A Song For You In My Dreams

So last night I had this weird dream in which I was auditioning for something and did not know ANY of the lyrics. I had to stop – it was so embarrassing – and tell the judges that I couldn’t remember any of the song (and I had just been coaching someone else on the very same one!) and that I would have to come back later. The only song I could think of where I knew all the lyrics front and back was “A Song For You” sung by The Carpenter’s. After rehearsing it in my mind a few times – I ran back into the room and said – “I’m ready!”  Because I know it so well – I was able to sing it with clarity and emotion – and NAILED IT.
Below is the song that even in my dreams I am able to bring to a quick recollection.

Have you ever done something in your dreams you would never do when you’re awake – like audition when not ready?

Enjoy and God Bless

I’ve been so many places in my life and time
I’ve sung a lot of songs I’ve made some bad rhyme
I’ve acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we’re alone now and I’m singing this song for you

I know your image of me is what I hope to be
I’ve treated you unkindly but darlin’ can’t you see
There’s no one more important to me
Darlin’ can’t you please see through me
Cause we’re alone now and I’m singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth witholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I’m so much better and if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I’m so much better and if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
We were alone and I was singing this song for you

God So Loved The World

I have had this great a cappella piece of music on my Spotify list for months now and every time it plays I stop what I’m doing in awed and reverenced silence.  I have sung in choirs before where this was a featured song, and everyone loved singing it. It is breathtaking when it is done right.

I looked until I found just the right group of singers to post it for you – and found to my great pleasure, a men’s choir from St. Paul’s Cathedral with men of all ages, from little boys with soprano voices to grown men who sing deep bass.

What is most impressive about this group of singers is that they do not care how silly they look when they sing.  They are quite mesmerized in their music – and the result is a beautiful blending of voices.  The diction is so clear and distinct – I can hear every word ending, even from the smaller boys.  It is sung in a cathedral with high ceilings and AWESOME acoustics and so the result is a rich and velvety tone like bells ringing and stopping in mid-air.  The true voice of heavenly angels.

The last couple of chords at the end of the piece are stunning and perfectly in tune – as they reach the climactic high point creating a feeling of well-being in those of us who have an appreciation for good music.  Watch it all the way through and you’ll see what I mean.  The little boys especially are wonderful to watch.

I am praying that this song will encourage you today and that it will cause you to stop and listen to the truth of the scripture, “God So Loved The World”.  And give you fresh perspective on the great love of our God who sent His son…

Queen Medley

In my opinion – this song was the performance of the evening on The Sing-Off last night!  If you like “Queen” you will love this medley from the Dartmouth Aires.

Enjoy and God Bless!

This AWESOME song is from Season 3, part 1 of “The Sing-off“.  I’m so glad someone told me about this A Cappella singing competition last season – and I was excited to see this year’s talent as well.   This group is called “Delilah” and consists of ALL GIRLS – which makes it pretty special – their vocal ability exceptional.  A group – with both beauty and amazing talent – I’m sure you’ll agree – they could win it all!

Enjoy their version of Bruno Mars‘ – “Grenade” and see why Ben Folds was so impressed with their “rolling 2nds” on the word “pain”  so COOL!!

Drops Of Jupiter

I can’t tell you why I love these song lyrics – but I identify with them somehow.    I was singing this with a voice student of mine this last week – and I asked her, “What do you think these lyrics mean?”  Interesting question, right?

I have found that the best song lyrics have a universal meaning.  And even though the writer of these words was taking something from his real life – it usually is a personal story that inspires the best songs.   This song is actually about a dream.  The lead singer of Train lost his mother to cancer and had a weird dream about missing her.   Enjoy it – it’s one of Train’s best songs and after listening to the song and seeing the lyrics – there is another video of Pat explaining about the dream and why he wrote the song.  It’s really great!

Who’s your “Drops Of Jupiter” today?  Who do you miss?

God Bless

Music Of The Night – David Cook Version

David Cook (album)

Image via Wikipedia

In my humble opinion – this is the best version of this song to date.  David is much more than just the “American Idol” a couple of  years ago – he is a very talented ballad singer.  This song takes amazing control – the high note he reaches when singing ‘in the night’ is truly his own signature on song – never copied by another artist before or since and it is –  magical. If you love the music from “Phantom of the Opera” – then you will love this version of “Music of the night“.
