Musings From A Musical Mind

Winter Song

This next song came across my Spotify play list and I just had to find the youtube video to share.  The harmonies are so great!  The group is called “The Head and the Heart”.  They are an indie folk-pop group formed in 2009 right here in Seattle!!  Hope you enjoy!

Keep Me In Your Heart

I had actually planned on posting another song today.  Then I was returning emails and checking messages at my computer and this song came on  my Spotify music list.  It was the song they played at the end of the “House” series.  For some reason it really speaks to me.  And I can’t get away from it.

Music sometimes does that to me.  I have something else going on and then am stopped dead in my tracks.  Maybe it’s because of things going on right now.  Maybe it’s because life throws some strange curve balls.  Maybe it’s because each new day brings new revelations and surprises.  I  think I am in control and then find that I have no control.  Circumstances come in to literally rock my world as they also sound strangely familiar.  A shadow of the past coming and staring straight at me.

In times like this I am humbled and thankful.  Humbled because I don’t deserve the grace and forgiveness of a great and wonderful God.  Thankful that in spite of the many mistakes and wrong turns I have made in the past I was able to right my path and live in victory.  I am surrounded by many loving people to encourage me in my life’s purpose and calling.  I am grateful.

But I realize that there are those not fully there yet.  They have their own journey to take and discover.  Things coming in to rock their world.  It is hard to see people take wrong turns and spin out of control.   We are all capable of  doing this from time to time.  Spin, justify, retreat, reason, ponder, turn, let go, go our own way.

This song is a song about a man dying.  Written and sung by Warren Zevon, I believe he realized his life as he ponders death.  What is really important.  The things he really loves.  A man who does not want to be forgotten.  Wants to know that his life mattered.   When it comes right down to it – don’t we all want this?  To be remembered, to have mattered.  Our actions we took in this life will mean something to us someday as we face our mortality.  Those things we thought were so important, worth fighting for, things we gave up, none of it will matter someday.  It is a sobering thought.  What is so important?  Is it really worth the spin?  Will people want to remember you when you’re gone?

It is a sobering thought.  Someday my actions will be called in to recall by those left behind.  I don’t know about you – but I want to be able to say “remember me” and when people do – they will have a good positive memory of my life and what I was called to do.

I wish the same for you.

Enjoy this song and the great lyrics.  May you ponder the same thing today and if you need to – make a change.

Where’s My Music?

Spotify Logo

I have always had a love/hate relationship with my CD/Radio.  There is a shelf for it in my bathroom.  Up until recently it has sat there, willing and able to play CD’s or a radio station of my choosing.  I like to have music going while I shower and get ready for my day.

The love part of the relationship is this:  I LOVE good music.

The hate part of the relationship is this:  I HATE commercials.

When listening to radio I have discovered there are TONS of commercials.  I really hate them.

When I listen to my own CD – because of the moisture in the bathroom – the CD sometimes skips or won’t play at all.

I have loved Spotify free service on my iMac so I decided to try Spotify premium service for a month so that I could listen to my playlist on my mobile devices and more particularly in the bathroom.  This meant getting rid of the clunky CD player and buying a speaker dock for my iPhone.

I actually tried one – returned it and tried another one.  Then because I didn’t want to pay for music from a monthly subscription like Spotify – I decided to explore internet radio.

I bought an app for .99 that allows me to access radio from around the world – COMMERCIAL FREE.  It is called SHOUTcast.

I can play it from my iPhone or iPad in my bathroom – my favorites include easy listening stations and movie soundtracks.  They are my new favorites.  Can’t wait to try Christmas stations.

And now there is commercial free music coming from a radio station of music that I love – any time I am in the bathroom getting ready for the day – or winding down for the night.

If you are a music lover – you will love this option on your mobile devices!  And if you have not yet discovered having a speaker dock for your mobile devices – I highly recommend Sony – great speaker sound and has a digital radio with it – with the clock displayed on the front.  Great for at night when I get up to go to the bathroom 🙂  It even has a remote – just like this one in the picture.  I use the remote ALL THE TIME – especially for Spotify tunes or tunes from my own playlist in iTunes.  I know you will love it!

Restless

I came across this beautiful worship song on Spotify – and did a search and found this great interview and live performance by the song writers and performers of the song.

We all get restless – what a great message!

When was the last time you felt restless – what was God teaching you during that time?

Enjoy and God Bless!

You dwell in the songs that we are singing
Rising to the Heavens, rising to Your heart, Your heart
Our praises filling up the spaces
In between and frailty and everything You are
You are the keeper of my heart

And I’m restless, I’m restless
‘Til I rest in You, ’til I rest in You
I’m restless, I’m restless
‘Til I rest in You, ’til I rest in You
Oh God, I wanna rest in You

Oh, speak now for my soul is listening
Say that You have saved me, whisper in the dark
‘Cause I know You’re more than my salvation
Without You I am hopeless, tell me who You are
You are the keeper of my heart
You are the keeper of my heart

And I’m restless, I’m restless
‘Til I rest in You, ’til I rest in You
I’m restless, I’m restless
‘Til I rest in You, ’til I rest in You
I wanna rest in You

Still my heart hold me close
Let me hear a still small voice
Let it grow, let it rise
Into a shout, into a cry

Still my heart hold me close
Let me hear a still small voice
Let it grow, let it rise

Into a shout, into a cry

And I’m restless, I’m restless
‘Til I rest in You, let me rest in You
I’m restless, so restless
‘Til I rest in You, ’til I rest in You
Oh God, I will rest in You

Day 4 – Christmas Lights by Coldplay

Candle

I’ve always LOVED the band Coldplay. My son introduced them to me about 4 years ago and I’ve been a fan ever since. I’m always drawn to acoustic piano as a base in a band and these guys are so talented.

This morning I woke up – turned on my Christmas list through Spotify and this was the first song to greet me.  I love the poignant lyrics and melancholy sadness that sometimes surrounds people during the holiday season.  And since we also have no snow many times in Seattle during this season, it seemed like something I could also relate to.  There’s something about snow that just makes you feel like Christmas.

I hope you will enjoy this song as much as I do.

Happy Thanksgiving – and God Bless!

Christmas night, another fight
Tears we’ve cried a flood
Got all kinds of poison in
Of poison in my blood
I took my feet to Oxford street
Trying to right or wrong
Just walk away those windows
But I can’t believe she’s gone
When your still waiting for the snowfall
Doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all
A group of candles on me are flickering
Oh they flicker and they flow
And I am up here holding on to all those chandeliers of hope
And like some drunken in this city
I am go singing out of tune
Singing how I always loved you darling
And how I always will
But when your still waiting for the snowfall
Doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all
Still waiting for the snow to fall
It doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all
Those Christmas Lights
Light up the street
Down where the sea and city meet
May all your troubles soon be gone
Ohh Christmas Lights keep shining on
Those Christmas Lights
Light up the street
Maybe they bring here back to me
Then all my troubles will be gone
Ohh Christmas Lights keep shining on
Ohh Christmas Lights
Light up the streets
Light up the fireworks in me
May all your troubles soon be gone
Those Christmas Lights keep shining on

With Clear Vision

I sit in my office this morning – listening to my Spotify playlist while working at my desk.  I look out my window and see the incredible colors of fall – the trees in our front yard being the last of the trees to turn color in our neighborhood – and am in awe and filled with wonder at the incredible beauty – just outside my window.

This is behind glass.  A window that separates me from the outside – and from seeing this picture with clear vision.

What separates you from seeing something with clear vision?  If this life we are living – is just a picture – a dim picture of reality – as though looking through a dark mirror, then what is reality?   Are things sometimes not as they really seem?  When was the last time you wondered about something like this?  When was the last time you wished you could see a situation with clear vision?

To Spotify Or Not To Spotify

I love music.  Not noise – but real music.  I also love listening to what I want to listen to – without any other “fillers” or “lesser” songs – like on CD’s – or the radio.

I used to love Pandora because I could pick and choose and put together a “personal” station of artists that I enjoyed.  If one came along that I didn’t care for I could skip it  or even delete it permanently from my list.  That was nice.  And I was quite satisfied.

But then I started hearing about Spotify.  I got an invitation and signed up for free.  At first – I’ll be honest – I wasn’t thrilled with it.  Pandora had done all the work for me and let me just “like” or “delete” a song occasionally.  That’s NOT how Spotify works.  You have to make up your own playlists by doing the research and then painstakingly choosing one at a time which songs or albums you want.  This was a big turn off to me – at first.  Then I gave in.  Took the time.  Started finding artists that I like – AND the missing songs from my youth and one by one started building my playlist.  Spotify has EVERY song from your favorite artist – going back to the beginning of time.  Something Pandora does not do.

I was thrilled to find such classics as “Grey Seal” by Elton John – not heard in more than 30 years.  “Change of Heart” by Bread not heard since the early 70’s and old classics by Billy Joel such as “Got to Begin Again” and several from the group “Second Chapter of Acts”.  My list is long – and grows everyday as I remember other songs and artists from long ago – and recently.   Once I type in a name – I get a WHOLE LIST of songs and ideas.

There is no limit for what can be added to my personal list – at least none that I’ve found so far.

But here’s another really GREAT thing about Spotify.  You can see what others have found and have included in their own music list!  If they have an account like you do – they will show up on you home page and you can click on their name and be snoopy and find out what they like – and what they listen to.  It’s pretty cool!  I got some great ideas from some friends of mine last night.

I have the free account – but there are also a couple of paid accounts – and my friends love this because it allows them to play their music list from their phone or any other computer by just logging in.  And on the paid accounts there are no commercial interruptions.  Not thrilled about that on the free account – but used to it – Pandora had the same thing.

I would encourage you to join – at least the free account and snoop around at what all of us are listening to – you may find songs you have forgotten about – and you may make some pretty cool discoveries of your own!

I say – SPOTIFY!!!
